the experience in A&E was horrendous. 111 told me to be seen in A&E within the our due to the severity of my symptoms. When I arrived I was told it would be 7 hours to be seen and they said 111 say that to everybody. I sat for 4 hours before I was triaged. It was another hour and a half before a doctor saw me. Another hour and half before I was re-reviewed by the doctor following bloods and told that I could go home with the medicine and follow up. The staff were friendly. But the updates from the staff were poor, we had to constantly ask what was happening. I felt sicker from being in A&E; the chairs were painful to sit on, nobody wore masks and anybody could of had covid19.

ALL the staff were attentive, polite and considerate at all times. They are under a lot of pressure but always made time to attend to the patients needs. They are doing an excellent job.

I went to A&E with whiplash. I unfortunately had one of the worst hospital experiences I have ever had. I waited for 10 hours in total before I was given a quick examination to determine I had whiplash. The staff were doing their best but this is just unacceptable. There was also construction taking place. Intense drilling and hammering for a total of 5 hours of my visit - resulting in a ridiculous headache. There were patients wailing in pain and I was crying silently into my mask as I approached 7 hours. Little updates through out except the wait time was just increasing, of which at each update I had already sat through more than 3/4 of the expected time. When I was seen by the doctor, he did a good examination but it was no more than 5 minutes before I was sent on my way, as x-rays would have taken another few hours and it wasn't worth it. It just feels ridiculous to keep anyone with any pain sitting in those chairs (worsening the pain) for such an extreme amount of time. I understand A&E is busy at every hospital, but 10 hours of wait to be discharged in 5 minutes just doesn't seem efficient. 111 referred me to the hospital as my pain was intense but this was one of the least helpful places I had been. The few staff there were tired and irritated, which I don't blame them for but there needs to be some better level of communication or electronic boards or something. There was just a million things wrong with this visit and it has put me off visiting Watford General again. The wait and exhaustion and irritation displayed from the staff was bad enough, but the construction was really the worst part and the cherry on the cake. It was painful in so many ways I have not been to the doctor or hospital in 3 years, I do not complain for every ailment but i wont be visiting Watford General again. I have absolutely no trust in this hospital for any emergencies again.

I had two stays in Elizabeth Ward all of the staff were amazing it was like staying in a hotel, Living on my own I did not want to leave. To have your meals cooked and served to you was a luxury. Continual drinks and snacks through the day - fantastic I really admire ALL of the staff that helped me to recovery following breaking my elbow and the surgery that followed.

My mother was admitted to respiratory Red Suite ward in the AAU unit at Watford General and received excellent care not just for her pneumonia but also for her Parkinson’s and severe neck problems. The staff were friendly and very caring and I felt she was in excellent hands and I could switch off and relax. Our problems with lack of care started when they transferred her to the disaster that is Aldenham ward. Phoning Aldenham ward is literally a nightmare. For the first week of a three week stay the phone wasn’t working properly and they sometimes couldn’t hear you see it keep dialling back. For the last week the line went down and couldn’t get through at all and I had to phone the operator. So not only can you barely ever reach the staff/nurses — and at times I had to try 10 times or leave it ringing for over 15 minutes (and still not get through on that occasion) (this was not during shift changeovers) to get through to them, — but when you do at times some of the nurses/staff barely understood what I was saying so bad was their English. One day it took me 5 hours and dozens of calls and I still hadn’t got through by 2pm. I gave up. Imagine not being able to see your loved ones because I’ve Covid restrictions and them not being able to talk to them either. It is an utter disgrace. And when I complained to “patient advice liaison” guess what? That’s right, the phone just rang and rang and rang. Whilst my mother only complained once about neck pain (from her Parkinson’s) in the Red Suite when she first arrived, she complained about it practically every day in Aldenham ward because they left her with her head and chin bent forward on her breast plate (giving her the sensation of choking) and this despite sending the exact same photograph (depicting how to keep my mother’s head upright with a neck brace and pillows) to both wards. Red Suite ward followed our simple instructions of how to support my mother’s head and neck with pillows and cushions and the neck brace we dropped off in the first days of my mother’s stay. Whilst there are other issues that I won’t go into, suffice to say that my mother is utterly exhausted and “at the end of her tether.” She asked me “how can one human being treat another human being so badly.” I gather she isn’t getting as much sleep as she needs and is very agitated about the situation. I am now pushing for a full discharge regardless of whether she needs to finish treatment. It is literally like she was transferred to a completely different hospital when they moved my mother out of Red Suite into Aldenham. Horrible experience.

Review of Physiotherapy Outpatients - Watford written by a patient
11th October 2020

I was in Watford general hospital for 5 weeks and had excellent physiotherapy and OT care following a stroke. It was personalised and professional. The staff were knowledgeable, listened and understood my needs, supported each other and are a lovely bunch of people. They kept appropriate notes for the continued development of my movement and have given me life changing help. I cannot thank them enough and wish them all success in their careers and hope they appreciate how much difference they are making.

Saturday 13/06. I walked into A & E, with a thump injury. From the moment I registered at the desk to the time I left. ( 1hr 15min ) was first class. Dr Karen Tasker saw me in minors department within 15 mins of arriving. She sent me for X Rays. 30 minutes later I saw her again. She diagnosed an open fracture. After fully informing me of all aspects of treatment, she dressed injury , provided antibiotics. Excellent service. I would also say all the areas I visited were very clean and clear instructions, regarding social distancing , were evident everywhere. Fantastic Experience. Thanks to everyone.
