I want to post this as an observation rather than a criticism. Overall, I felt efficiently and effectively cared for. Specifically, three things concern me in relation to my full knee replacement surgery in August of this year: Firstly, I was astonished at being asked/forced to get out of bed and try to walk on the same day (and within hours) of being operated on. This was attempted twice - once by my day nurse and again during the night. I was in excruciating pain, tearful and I asked/urged the nurses to leave me to rest. They didn't! Secondly, I was originally booked in to stay three days. I was an inpatient for less than 33 hours. Finally, my post-surgery review has not taken place as arranged. I was looking forward to this review because I have made such good progress and I was eagerly anticipating a positive conversation with my surgeon. I also wanted to use this review to discuss my other knee (already historically weakened by arthroscopies and debridements) and posit the idea of perhaps a second knee replacement surgery in the future. My post-surgery review had been arranged for 10:45 on Friday the 5th of December and I had cleared my own diary so that I would be available for this very important discussion. Someone tried to speak to me on Tuesday the 2nd of December, but I was enjoying a celebratory family meal. The person calling put the phone down before I could explain the situation. On the morning of Friday the 5th of December - 30 minutes BEFORE the appointment - someone from the hospital made three attempts to call me, but I was taking my 'constitutional'. I didn't take my phone with me, knowing that I would return home in good time for the appointment. I am still waiting for my post-surgery review.
