I found my stay here very traumatic. I was shocked by how uncaring the staff were. I didn't feel I was treated with respect or even as a human being. The consultant psycharist was did not listen to me or treat me with any worth. I felt very unsafe, a huge fight broke up while i was there and the police were called. This was very upsetting to witness. I would not recommend this hospital at all.

This place is the worst mental health hospital my mum has ever been admitted to and she has been in several. The grounds and hospital look lovely and my mum said the food was excellent, but the staff are rude, they do not return your call, they refused to send me a complaints form and their complaints policy. They kept my mum waiting hours for her medication and tried to discharge her in a taxi to her home address when she was suffering from paranoia and dillusions. They use agency staff who do not know who is on call in case of an emergency and my mum only stayed here for a week. Avoid this hospital it is the worst place for vulnerable patients with mental illness.

I would never in my life recommend this hospital to anyone. I was placed on the CAMHS (young people) ward when I was 17. I was placed on the High Dependency Unit (HDU) also known as Upper Court. I can honestly say that this was the worst hospital I have ever been in. The lack of patient safety and care is worrying. There's a serious lack of staff and most of the staff that work there are run off their feet with no breaks and can be left to deal with dangerous situations on their own. The staff either used physical restraint when unnecessary. But often left certain patients to do whatever they wanted to themselves. If a patient seriously injured themselves then there was a lack of medical attention. Patients are left to bang their heads on the wall and there were often blood stains on the walls left for days or even weeks. Staff gossip with each other in front of patents and even gossip to patients about other patients on the ward, which is a serious breach of safeguarding. There is very limited therapy and activities during the day. Patients are kept on the ward for an excessive amount of time. For example another patient I was on the ward with was admitted 2 years before and had remained in the Priory since. There is very limited ventilation in the summer and they even keep the heating on in the summer too

This hospital is to be avoided at all costs: very poor communication from the staff, messages from family not communicated to the patient over a period of 3 weeks. No involvement of patient in their treatment, no explanation of what the prescribed medication is, its benefits and side effects. So called therapeutic activities are aimed at 4 year olds, not fully grown adults. General hygiene is very poor, rests of food from the previous night can be found on the dining room tables at breakfast. Staff regularly demolishes the food trolley before patients had a time to make their choices. all this is far from the nurturing environment one would expect to be in place for patients to get better. The methods used there are absolutely inadequate in the 21st century.

I spent five years at The Priory, Ticehurst. From 2010-2015. Knowing through experience what many other hospitals; both NHS and Private, put their Patients through, I would highly recommend The Priory, Ticehurst given the choice when making any comparison to the poor service within Mental Health Services across the Uk. On arrival in 2010, I was overwhelmed by the beautiful surroundings both inside and out. The personal Client centred care that was given by Staff of every level, and the pure quality of care I received was second to none! Diagnosed with Complex PTSD, BPD and Depression, I was spoken with as a human being for the first time in years! I was enrolled in Occupational Therapy, and Trauma Focused Therapues, including EMDR, DBT, Art Therapy and Exercise. I began to improve significantly and I moved from the main building into TLU (Transitional Living Unit) during 2012, and my life became something worth fighting for. Sadly, vast changes were made by Government, NHS Funding Boards and falling on to the Priory management team and new Hospital Director, Beulah N, they caused an atmosphere of fear amongst staff that should they speak the truth (commonly known as whistle blowing) their jobs would swiftly become untenable. On one day in particular, I remember 3 highly valued members of staff walk out, then dismissed. This poor management of valuable long serving caring staff impacted throughout the entire hospital including us as Patients. It is in my opinion, extremely important to look after your current loyal Staff before hiring more or replacing them with Bank Staff... Who not only did not know the day to day running of the hospital, it causes permanent staff extra pressure and extra work, meaning a lot less time to 'care' for Patients. The knock on impact made life almost unbearable during 2014 and as a result I became less stable. This slowed down therapy and ultimately I was given 7 days notice by my Funders to leave and live in Society. A scary thought after 7 ½ years in hospitals!! The few remaining trustworthy staff did all they could to help me in this transition. The care in the community team promised much yet again and my instability placed me on the Acute Ward within the walls of Ticehurst Priory. This was an experience I would never wish on my worst enemy. Permanent long serving staff were run off their feet, staff were left for entire shifts sat on 1:1 observations and Patients were denied essentials, and told off like naughty children. The attitude of temporary along with a very few other permanent staff on this Acute ward only; particularly a female Psychiatrist, and the Ward Manager at the time, was disgusting! I wouldn't expect Prisoners to be treated like that, never mind human beings with illnesses! Overall, I would recommend the excellent Therapy Centre, and TLU.
