BEFORE THE SURGERY: About 4 years ago my parents saw how uneven my shoulders were and how lopsided i stood (baring in mind my back would always be in pain). The doctors took straight action and referred me to the Royal London hospital. Approximately 3 years ago i was then diagnosed with scoliosis. This is when i started to see Mr Arun Ranganathan. Across these 3 years i was told how severe my scoliosis was (62 degrees) and the different ways as to which it could be cured. I was thinking about getting a brace but seeing as i am a teenager, i would have to wear it under my clothes for 22 hours a day which i did not like he idea of. the only other option that would seem to work with my case would be surgery. when i heard that this was the only option there were days when would cry and regret agreeing to this option but now this is the best decision i have made in my entire life! After agreeing to this option, a couple months later i had many appointments to ask all the questions i needed, blood tests and all the information i would need to know about the day. Mr Ranganathan and his assistants answered all of my questions with great detail and made sure i wasn't scared! THE DAY OF THE SURGERY: i had to get to the hospital a day before and i was really nervous. I really didn't want to do it due to the risks (although they're minimal) and because my surgery was just at the start f summer which meant people were going to have fun without me. Another thing i was the most worried about was the large scar i was going to have and if it will show when i wear my clothes. the next day my surgery started early in the morning and took about 5 hours. when i wake up i didn't even know it happened because i was in ZERO pain and i was very tired.i was in the hospital for 5-6 days and Mr Ranganathan and the rest of the team made sure they visited me and came if i needed help almost everyday. I was in intensive care for the first two days and moved to a ward for the rest. I was taught how to walk, sit up and sit on a chair all by myself. Once you have to d it by yourself it may be hard but my advice is to never give up because you can do it if you put your mind to it! i didn't have any worries about pain because i was given as much pain relief as i needed. AFTER THE SURGERY: on the ride home i found it quite hard as it was a bumpy road so i needed pillows. when you gt home i would recommend not laying on a large bed but laying on a single bed as it is easier to grab things and move around. this was a mistake i unfortunately made on my first day home. for the first two weeks i really regretted doing the surgery because i couldn't go out as much as i thought i could and every position was uncomfortable. Fortunately all you need is a fun, loving family and friends to make you forget bout the pain. i would say in 4 weeks i was able to do all the minimal things i could do before like going to the toilet and walking around with no help. in my opinion i would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this surgery to anyone as all members of staff on the hospital are exceptionally trust worthy and polite and in a few years you'll definitely know its the best choice you've made. also the outcome is tremendous. i went from having a very curvy spine to the tiniest curve (as scoliosis is not 100% curable).
