The staff at the McIndoe centre were lovely and really assisted with my recovery. All the little details - cleanliness of the room, attentiveness of the nurses checking the very important DVT machine and monitoring my blood pressure etc helped me feel well cared for. I was surprised by how I felt after surgery - I could not even move my shoulders to get more comfortable. It's vital that the nursing staff are highly observant, switched on and approachable because surgery is not without risk. They were very attentive to me but I did reach out to them. If I needed something - I rang the buzzer. Patients should be encouraged to ask for help if they need it - however small their concern seems. The anaesthetist described what the effects of the medication would be which was reassuring and useful to know. Pain medication is an area which needs to be discussed. The drugs needed after surgery are very strong. I would have liked to have been given a booklet on pain medication - that is my one suggestion. I found the booklet on the risk of blood clots very informative and helpful and was pleased that the hospital have DVT machines. I would definitely recommend the McIndoe centre.
