Review of Urgent Treatment Centre - Adult written by a patient
10th December 2020

Arriving at the UTC, I had about a 20 minute wait in a line outside, during which I phoned 11 to update them on my situation and ask if I was doing the right thing, and then when the line moved forward enough that I could see the number to ring for questions, I spoke to (I assume) the UTC to check if I was doing the right thing; 111 had told me to go to St Peter's for a 13:30 appointment with no further information, so I followed signed and ended up in the UTC line, but there were no staff to check with to know if I was doing the right thing. Soon after, staff started coming outside and gathering information on the patients, and I was checked in. After being checked in, being seen was quick and the doctor I saw was fantastic. He was clearly very busy and seemed quite stressed, but he still took the time to give me compassionate treatment tailored to my needs. He then referred me to Surgical ED via A&E triage, for which I've already submitted a review.

Suggested improvements
If the UTC is overflowing like it was, it would be great if there could be a member of staff outside to let patients know that they're doing the right thing just joining the queue when they turn up.

Review of A&E St Peters written by a patient
10th December 2020

I spent around 8 hours at A&E between seeing the UTC doctor and waiting for UTC, Surgical ED triage, and SAUV. I gave a urine sample after about two hours, and bloods after about four and a half hours. Around seven and a half hours in was when I got to see the doctor handling my case and that was the first time I got any information on the results of the urine sample and blood work. The doctor then discharged me and told me that the hospital would contact me the next day (today) for me to have an ultrasound. Yesterday no one told me if I should be eating or not so after a biscuit at 10am, the only thing I ate until around 10pm was a bottle of Huel I slowly drank during the afternoon as I got hungry enough that that became more pressing than my abdominal discomfort. I was told that today I shouldn't eat and drink only water. As a result, I'm not eating whilst I wait for the hospital's call, so I hope I do not get left to wait until 9pm again today! Whilst I do understand the need to prioritise emergency situations over a non-emergency situation like mine and really feel for the doctors that were rushed off their feet all shift, the above is why I indicated delay and a lack of being informed in my responses.

Suggested improvements
It would be great if the hospital could provide some level updating patients with what is known about their case, even if that were just someone coming and saying something like "The doctors are super busy, it's going to be a while before you're seen. We've got the urine and bloods results back and need to wait for the doctor to interpret them." Could the A&E reception implement some kind of ticketing system and a display that told you which number was the next case to be triaged? I understand that it could cause a lot of potential upset if emergencies kept coming in and the display never ticked up, but it could do a lot to reassure patients that they're still in the queue and that they haven't just missed their name being called. The last thing I noticed - while waiting for A&E triage - was that names being called would often be hard to understand or be called from one end of the A&E waiting room seemingly quiet enough that I don't think I would have heard my name being called if I were sitting at the far end of the waiting room. I imagine it is incredibly difficult for staff to consistently search the waiting area for people, which perhaps a ticketing system would also help with.

Whilst I did give the highest score & the staff deserve it the waiting time was unbelievable. I was in A&E for over 11 hours. Thank you though to all the staff that have appeared to come up with all the right answers to my problems.

Suggested improvements
Reduce heat he waiting times, but that unfortunately revolves around the patient's like me who come into A&E.

- every NHS staff member I met was helpful, courteous and efficient and, in particular, the specialist ‘nurse’ practitioner who ultimately took care of me was ‘amazing’, making me feel relaxed and confident and keeping me well informed. - the distancing arrangements and cleanliness were excellent. - I was a nervous patient but the attitude and approach of all NHS staff at A&E made me feel calm and secure. - thank you!

Suggested improvements
- whilst I have no complaints and understand with COVID, managing patients is not easy, but it was a very cold day and having to wait outside feeling poorly with nowhere to sit was uncomfortable . -

In May 2013 I had a Clatissimus Dorsi Tendon Transfer performed by Mr Gupta. The operation went well and I only spent one night in hospital. I had some discomfort for the first couple of days, and I had to wear an Abduction Wedge Support for six weeks. I did all the exercises I was given and it wasn't long before I was back doing normal things. I had to be very careful what I did for at least a year. It has now been seven years since my operation and my shoulder is as good as new and i am so glad I had it done. David Wensley

Review of Urgent Treatment Centre - Adult written by a family member

My son was treated by a kind and caring lady called Sam EMP, to say she went above and beyond her job description would be an understatement. My son was very scared and upset, Sam took her time with him and found different ways to treat him, she also helped with my anxiety. I have always been a big fan of the NHS but have even more respect for them to see them working under pressure still smiling and caring.

Suggested improvements
Although we only waited outside the UTC for a minute, it was raining and I can imagine people waiting a long time in the cold and rain, I understand COVID guidelines but maybe a Marquee or tent to protect those stuck outside would help.

Caring and supportive throughout the whole process. Thank you

Suggested improvements
Prevent waiting at the UTC door, especially on a cold evening. Larger UTC initial waiting area, it filled up quite quickly especially if you are a parent with a child, you feel like you are in the way.
