Review of Urgent Treatment Centre - Adult written by a patient
17th December 2020

Was referred to UAC for further assessment so not able to state care plan and they were very busy.

Suggested improvements
Maybe a little more privacy when stating what was wrong as no room for this as very small environment however under the circumstances it was ok.

Martin the a&e medic we saw was just absolutely amazing. We were seen really quickly too, so our daughter wasn’t distressed or worried. Really great experience.

Review of A&E St Peters written by a patient

I cut my thumb and needed the wound glued shut and to also have a tetanus shot. The doctor on call was brilliant and kind and despite a clearly busy A&E on a Saturday afternoon I only waited just over an hour.

Suggested improvements
I had a very good experience

Review of Ash Ward - St Peter's

The way I was spoken to by one of the nurses, Asty, was disgraceful. I’m a breastfeeding mother and she made me feel inadequate by telling me my child’s belly was empty and that’s why she was upset and that she needed formula. Absolutely not the case at all, however to pacify her I gave my daughter more formula to top up her breastfeeds than I usually would. I raised my concerns with Caroline (deputy sister) and I have been assured that the nurse will be spoken to about the way she worded her comments. She spoke down to me, assuming I was stupid and lacked understanding of the situation-which I was asking for clarity on. Sabrina was amazing, ensured I always had a hot drink and food (very important for a breastfeeding mum!) and Louise (night staff) was also fantastic.

Suggested improvements
I believe some staff could benefit from some communication training and some additional breastfeeding training. If a nurse is concerned about a baby’s feeding then they should be making referrals to the infant feeding team, not bottle pushing.

Review of A&E St Peters written by a carer

Took my 97 year old father. We had to go to so called temporary Portavadie for non urgent treatment. Waiting time 3 to 4 hours. Packed, warm room, little social distancing, appeared no ventilation. Took him home as not prepared to risk waiting in that environment. More risk of catching covid. They need to sort out covid prevention. Masks are only of limited use

Suggested improvements
Much better covid precautions and realise staff are tired but they appeared bored and uninterested. Didn't take our temperature and should have done

Great care and brilliant staff - admin and medical. Had to wait a bit for treatment but this was understandable as on this occasion it was particularly busy in the UTC.

Suggested improvements
The care and treatment was first class, the only thing that would make the experience any better would be reduced wait times, but given this was A&E / UTC I’m not sure this is realistically achievable at peak times ie. a weekend afternoon in my case.

We were given a 10:00pm appointment for my 6 year old and arrived 10 mins prior only to be seen 1 1/2 hours later.

Suggested improvements
If we get given an appointment time by 111 I think we should be seen within 30 mins of the given time.

I couldn't give the marks I wanted as one member of the team totally let everyone and everything down. As a Covid19 positive case i was taken to a seperate part of the unit, the Dr explained to the HCA what to do next. I don't think I have ever met someone who gave me instant lack of confidence, could spell my name which is easy, didn't know howbto do obs on an infant, failed to book us is in so no doctors knew we where there, complained constantly when the dr asked to do my obs every 10mins because he thought they were fine - i just wanted to tell him to get on with it. When a Dr saw me and got me a bed in a&e opposite he asked this HCA to escort me over to the correct place, instead he marched me to A&E main reception with no regard for the fact i was having breathing difficulties!! The poor receptionist had to tell me to wait outside, leave the desk and find some one to help me. The Dr I saw in UTC ended up escorting me to the correct area and was extremely apologetic. I cannot fault any of other the UTC drs or staff, they were all friendly and put you at ease. Explained everything, what was going to happen and why, instilled confidence. They never appeared stressed or harrassed and genuinely concerned as if you were their priority.

Suggested improvements
HCA was usless New Dr in A&E insisted I was topless for my ecg which was ok but it would have been nice if she could have respected the fact i wasn't comfortable and been a bit more conscious of her actiond rather than removing the blanket and moving my breasts read just the cables. She may have seen may boobs but its not the point, I've never experienced a topless ecg in my life.

We were seen so quickly. The treating doctor was probably one of the kindest, genuine and professional people I have ever met. He was reassuring and knowledgeable. He is an absolute credit to the NHS. I can’t thank him enough. Thank you so much.

Suggested improvements
Would have preferred not to need to go to the ETC first. Children should be able to go straight to children’s A&E.
