Review of Urgent Care Service written by a family member
5th September 2019

All was well until I was prescribed medication.....The pharmacy only had 1 of the 2 that I needed from my emergency appointment. They gave me a slip of paper stating that it would be in stock in 2 days, but that I could buy it over-the-counter in town if I wanted it sooner! I had to make a special trip into town and the cost of that medicine was over £18 over-the-counter. How on earth can a hospital be out of stock? and why should I have to pay additionally for my medication for my care. The prescription should be redeemable anywhere - not just at the hospital. I was in pain and already they are making a difference. But I would have to wait 2 days for the hospital to provide this!! I cannot easily find a review section for the pharmacy, so have put under urgent care. This is not good.

My daughter was admitted after being brought through A&E with severe stomach pain and sickness. Since being on the ward she has received really great care and the Health Care Assistants, especially Lee have been really helpful and kind to her. The nurses have also been lovely and have taken great care of her, (Ester and Sheila) are the ones I remember. All tests that have been carried out, which have been numerous, (bloods, ECG, ultrasound, endoscopy, x-ray etc have all been carried out properly, effectively in order to try and determine my daughter's condition. I have had to ask about results and what's next on a couple of occasion's but have received the answers back fairly quickly after asking. St Mary's has done absolutely everything possible with my daughter who was visiting from Southampton for the weekend and have remained persistent where others hospitals have not, in an effort to try and establish a cause for her illness. I thank everyone involved for that and their diligence and persistence. A good job done by marvellous people in a hospital that deserves a better rating than it currently has.

Review of Emergency Department written by a family member
21st August 2019

My daughter was brought in Sunday morning with severe stomach pain and sickness by ambulance. She was seen fairly quickly and given some pain relief which helped her alot. The Health Care Assistants were really great, especially Becky and Lee who made sure that my daughter got appropriate pain relief when necessary. They helped as much as they could considering how busy A&E was that day. They helped my daughter overnight and into the next day until she was finally admitted. Results and communication of those results for tests that had been done could have been passed quicker instead of me having to ask what was happening some hours later, however when I did ask, the answer came back fairly quickly. The department was under pressure and extremely busy, so I understand. At Helens ward was where she was finally admitted and my feedback for that is on the inpatient section.

Review of Emergency Department written by a family member
20th March 2019

Although the waiting around was very long, my mother who is nearly 91 was checked thoroughly and treated courteously by the A&E team on Sunday 17th March. From my initial call to 111 to the ambulance crew who arrived very promptly and were also very helpful and professional, I would like to thank everyone involved with my mother's care. My only disappointment was that we were left wondering what was going on with little or no updates unless we asked a member of the team who was passing. It was quite distressing for my elderly mother, who was left to sit on the not so comfortable A&E stretcher for over seven hours.

Review of Main Outpatient Department written by a patient
15th March 2019

Due to a longer than expected waiting list I need to arrange an appt. with Mr Makunde to discuss medication. I have spent most of this week telephone the urology outpatients appt. number. It is never answered. Today it is on permanent answer phone with a message stating staff are at lunch. There is no facility to leave a message. The main switchboard cannot assist stating the answer machine has been left on and that there is nothing I can do. My outpatients appt. is over due and I have no date yet, my operation is delayed past the date the Dr stated it would be done. I cant contact anyone to chase this up / make an appt. or to discuss medication. This is not acceptable for the main hospital on the island.

Review of Community Rehab Services written by a family member
8th February 2019

All members of the Rehab Team have been courteous, caring and extreemly helpful. My mother was given a full and thorough assessment of all her current needs, and we highly recommend Marius in particular, who has been most professional and supportive both on the telephone and during all his visits.

Review of Asthma and Allergy - Children's
30th January 2019

We have visited The Ashtma and Allergy Clinic now quite a few times and the care our 2 year old son receives is always exceptional. After attending his yearly breathing and allergy check up and test we left feeling so grateful for the wonderful time and care given to us by specialist nurses Charlene and Nicky, Dr.Butterworth and dietician Sarah Todd. We leave that clinic feeling equipped to give our son the best life and care despite his allergies/breathing and skin issues. They’re always there if you need them and are always willing to answer our endless questions. The clinic is always extremely busy and full to the brim but the team always smile their way through the heavy work load and are so tolerant and good with the children from babies to teens. Thank you! You’re a real credit to St.Marys Hospital!

Review of Antenatal Services written by a patient
11th October 2018

I had an awful experience with a consultant on 3rd October 2018. The consultant was Dr Kanu and was a stand in for Dr Kenney. At the appointment I was 35 weeks pregnant and hoping to book my Caesarian in (I had a Caesarian less than two years ago and it is within my right to request another one) when I said to the consultant I want a Caesarian he threw his pen down and said it was within his right to medically refuse if he thinks it is not necessary. He then turned around and said I need to book in for another consultant meeting to get a second opinion?? At this point I had already waited an hour and 45 minutes to see him with NO apology from him and just rudeness. He did not go through anything with me apart from quizzing me what the dangers of a Caesarian is. He wasn't professional and clearly let his own opinion Of a natural birth take over the actual reason as to why i was there. When I said I have already waited an hour and 45 minutes he laughed and said what exactly do I want him to do, I said arrange a date and I also need to see an anaesthetist to discuss being asleep for my Caesarian, he then got even ruder saying he would only ever give consent for a Caesarian on 'the condition of being awake' and never attempted once to discuss why I felt I didn't want to be awake. Two weeks later I still do not have a Caesarian booked in and it seems everyone is constantly trying to delay appointments in the hope I will go into labour with a natural birth to most likely save money and less amount of care given. I have been reminded continuously thought the pregnancy about funding.. How about giving the option for patient a to pay? I'm sure there is many that would prefer to pay to get decent care than to feel like a constant inconvenience, i would. I know someone that is already booked in for their Caesarian in December? I'm due in the next few weeks and am battling for it. Disgraceful.

Review of Ophthalmology written by a family member
11th September 2018

My partner attended the eye dept on Friday 7th September, it was complete chaos, too many clinics and not enough staff. I watched one nurse have some sort of panic/anxiety breakdown, I watched another nurse in blue breakdown in tears. We had to wait 30mins for a scan on my partners eyes because the lady doing the scans was on her own with no help, we was stood up against a wall with no seating. My partner had a field test I believe they called it and the Male nurse who did it (he was very tall and young) he was walking about on his mobile phone with not a care in the world, completely unprofessional in my opinion. I had emailed a letter of complain in but have not received a reply. Who is in charge of this dept and where were they, we was not told of any clinics running late nor were any of us offered refreshments, 3 and a half hours we were sat waiting for an appointment with the dr that took 8mins!!! We are absolutely disgusted with the way it was run, you have staff running around trying to do 10 things at once and certain staff lounging around on their mobile phones!
