I was first sent to this establishment (its stretching things to call it a hospital) at the age of 14, for trying to run away from a children's home which was using the Pindown method of torture ( there was a big police investigation about Pindown and information about it can be read on Hansard). I was placed on a mixed sex adult ward, and was abused, physically, sexually and emotionally by two members of staff and another patient. That was over 50 years ago, and of course the awful experience has caused a lot of mental distress.
Ive been repeatedly sent back to that place. Once, actually kidnapped by police from the back of an ambulance, after being treated for a suspected stroke because I collapsed at Victoria Park. Over the years I have been treated very badly by Staffordshire mental health services. Ive never received proper treatment there. Never had psychotherapy for example, which would almost certainly have saved me from making some terrible trauma bonding decisions.
I must mention Dr Agell from the Chebsey ward, as he probably deserves a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the worst psychiatrist in the universe. He told me to my face that child abuse does not cause mental illness, and he refused to read my medical and social work records stating that "it would take too long". I think that man is totally unsuitable in his job as a healer as he has zero compassion and knowledge of the most basic causes of mental trauma. Im shocked to read from other patients reviews that hes still working there, thought he would have been sacked for negligence by now.
Ive found myself once more needing support, and my GP made a referral, but there is NO support as far as I can see. The telephone support service is a waste of time because its obviously severely understaffed. I feel sorry for the underpaid and overworked staff. Ive taken up yoga and am doing everything I can to help myself, but im in a terrible position, and am also having to support someone else. Im not very hopeful that PALS will help me, as im forced to file a complaint to try to get the help and support I need, but I will have to try.
I deserve much better than this. Its a disgusting disgrace.
Well worst mental health hospital there is out there. I have current experience on Brocton and past experience from over 5 years. This current time im on a section 2 after being on a ventilator and I have an upcoming operation in general hospital 2 weeks in which I mentioned to the consultant and asked him to make sure he could make the arrangements for me to still attend it. He said I may not be here then. Bare in mind a section 2 is up to 28 days. So how can he make this decision the next day after ive arrived from general hospital after being on a ventilator after trying to take my own life.?!! Doesn't fill me with much hope of other patients safety (im not bothered about myself but I care very much for other people) No wonder so many people end up de@d after leaving these wards.
Now my experience 5-8 years ago on brocton as a 17 year old was much more positive and the staff couldn't of been more amazing mainly with a few failings.
This time staff dont have the time of day for you.
I have major physical health issues and raised issues multiple times the 1st night and day that needed sorting urgently as after affects from being on a ventilator (possible further review at a&e) but these were completely ignored (had to attend a&e on advice of the gp when i left). This time around im also half deaf with no hearing in one ear and this gets completely ignored by most staff.
I am physically disabled and requested help from a close friend in my bedroom on my first visit to help with physical care. This was refused despite her being management of a home care company herself and is safeguarding/care/quality leed also (says on a poster on the ward that visitors are allowed in rooms if it has been agreed by nurse in charge) I was made to go into either a communal area or the therapy suite despite my walking being poor and having social aniexty.
NURSE ALI is also amazing. Such a caring nurse who is so understanding.
Courtney the health care assistant who was also here years ago on this ward is AMAZING still but I carnt say much about the others who have neglected me NOW AND IN THE PAST. I would also like to mention freya who is also an amazing nurse on the ward and there were also a few health care assistants which were good I carnt remember all their names but I do remember Ann marie, who I knew from when I was younger and she was really helpful and kind too and bridget who is amazing but unfortunately left whilst I was there.
The ots were really good too including mandy. The physical health doctor (think it was dr goal or something like that was shocking) she wanted to send me up to a&e for something that didnt need a&e. This was to do with one of my chronic illnesses and i just needed a syringe but was refused a syringe despite being experienced in the issue i was experiencing. So I just sorted it with something else which wasnt the best thing to use however I wasnt arguing with them any longer.
I havent been provided with any support whilst here as I dont present as "depressed" as im very good at hiding my emotions.
To add to this 4-5 years ago when I was on chebsy I was also groomed by a health care assistant which also continued when I left chebsy ward and I ended up pregnant with his baby who I sadly gave birth to stillborn. At this time whilst I was on the ward ive since found out there was at least 3-4 safeguardings raised about said health care assistant none of which got actioned.
The care years ago was appaling just as now.
Brocton ward is also mainly filled with agency/temporary staff.
THEY ALSO REFUSE TO ANSWER CALL BELLS FOR DISABLED PEOPLE AND ANTAGONISE AUTISTIC PAITENTS. THIS WAS NURSE JOYCE WHICH I HAVE SOLID EVIDENCE OFF TOO. I ASKED THEM TO LEAVE ME ALONE AS I WAS GETTING FRUSTING AND SHE POINT BLANK REFUSED.
ALSO ACCORDING TO THIS NURSE THEN THE ONLY PEOPLE THEY ATTEND THE CALL BELLS TOO IS PEOPLE WHO PHYSICALLY CARNT WALK. ANYONE ELSE WHO IS DISABLED (DESPITE ME BEING A FALLS RISK AND MY HEART RATE GOING 10 TO THE DOZEN WHENEVER I STAND) SHES STATING I HAVE TO GO TO THE OFFICE because i have legs. Discrimination at its finiest from this nurse. For some reason this nurse also thinks its acceptable to send 2 people to me (her and another hca) when I do need something. Never had this in my life at all and I used to be in mental health wards alot when I was younger.
There was 1 shift whilst I was here which the staffing level was unsafe and only 1 nurse was on shift. There is supposed to be two.
Agency/bank staff just sat speaking amongst themselves when free sometimes in their own language.
This is dangerous as if you have a patient with paranoia on the ward and they are speaking in their own language the paitent could become violent and paranoid.
The staff pretty much do nothing with the patients unless its the regular staff they seem better than the bank and agency which seem to just do it for the money (which is higher pay than regular staff get)
It is an awful hospital and the goverment really need to be doing something to help. Unfortunately people dont want to work in these kind of units and become permanent staff on a ward because of low pay you can work in aldi/Tesco for better pay and the low staffing levels.
This government needs to do better!
The hospital need to get more permanent staff on the wards make sure they are not understaffed and engage with patients.
They don't ensure severely mentally unwell people are safe. The patient if vulnerable is used and abused by other people.staff are indifferent, pyschiatrists accuse mentally ill patients of criminal acts. .The ward is a mixed ward, the male patients are often in female patients bedrooms.Because it's an acute ward, the hospital want you out as soon as possible. The place is corrupt from the health worker up to top management . As long as they look good, they really don't have empathy for patients. Often sending them home ,if they have one, which are dirty and unsafe. They say we can't look after them 24/7 ,what are the cons and social workers for ? Though to be fair, how can they help people, who should be in hospital
I am a relative/carer. We have a genetic disorder , and it can cause mental illness. The first time I had experience of St Georges hospital was Brocton Ward 2003. My eighteen year old relative has epilepsy and suddenly became out of touch with reality. A Dr Muris at the time wrote relative had personality disorder. Relative deteriated, and friends and family said to get relative out of there. After several months, relative had seizure, then referred to neuropyschiatry under another trust . When on Brocton, the staff were indifferent to familiys distress and basically ignored us not bothering with relatives epilepsy medication., Dr Muris would talk to me, and I think she gave in her notice and didnt practise again. Under other trust neuropyschiatry, it was no quick fix, many anti pyschotics were tried, yet it wasnt until relative was put on a drug for treatment resistant schizophrenia that relative got better, with anti convulsants for epilepsy. Relative was initially inpatient at Harplands hospital, neuro behavioural ward, then was an out patient with them, it was out of area ( the difference from St Georges hospital was fantastic, the staff on neuro ward at harplands were amazing and caring ), relatives consultant left nhs and we had problems, where in 2016 our relative was taken off treatment as she was discharged from neuropyschiatry, even though her eeg showed her epilepsy was active. with not been on medication , relative became grossly pyschotically unwell. Unfortunately relative was sent to Brocton ward and they said we are not putting her back on this treatment, we dont want to see the records from last twelve years, we have our own practise. they sent relative to cygnet, coventry, which cqc closed down because of patients deaths. Relative wasnt getting better, for a little while cygnet put relative back on the treatment that kept relative well, Then St Georges social worker, said take no notice of relative, she is not a responsible family. Cygnet took relative off her treatment, and she was injected with all drugs that in the past made her very unwell and didnt work. St Georges said relative couldnt see me, they tried to displace me as nearest relative, Ranjit Mal ,social worker had a lot of power and they just took notice of her. As nearest relative, I got a hearing for my relative, and one of the managers said for goodness sake, get this woman back on her treatment, she was on when under consultant at harplands hospital. St Georges after nine months were going to incarcerate relative with team of carers. they put her back on treatment but also on a lot of a drug that made her shake, they kept me away. I phoned safeguarding to say St Georges hospital hadnt let me see my relative for nine months and she was been emotionally and psychologicaly abused , been ridiculed and not allowed to see me. They discharged my relative then, and within a month she was off the drugs they gave her, which made relative much clearer and her cognition better, yet back on treatment from Harplands hospital . To sum up, the staff at St Georges dont like the patients, because of how patients are, they dont listen to you, ignore you and the patients and the hospital needs investigating. I am not the only one who feels like this, bad pyschiatrists are Dr Kumar and Dr Agell, Dr Grewell not much better. As for the nurses, Rachel Horton seemed to enjoy phoning me , saying you are never going to see your relative again, and dont bother trying to find out how she is as you wont get told. I think I am suffering from PTSD, as I already have physical health issues, this is eating me up. Thankfully , relative on right treatment is doing ok.initially just thankful relative ok, despite what she went through, as she cant remember much of it. This hospital is acute wards, they want a quick fix, if , they either take patient off everything,or go the other extreme, then if no joy, send them hundreds of miles away to private units, who are American. Absolute nightmare.St Georges hospital, and social workers who the pyschiatrists get information from, but not from the patients previous consultant for last twelve years. relative now under pyschiatry and neurology, unfortunately its not combined, but better than when relative under just St Georges hospital. My relative is never ever going back there, I could have got relative back into Harplands and they would have put her back on treatment straight away. St Georges hospital stripped her of her dignity and good reputation, Harplands never did that, they said she has an illness of the brain, on the right treatment she will be fine, and she is.
During my 3 week stay I along with the other patients were left to our own devices. Nurses sat in the office all day with the door shut and most health care staff sat together in a corner chatting. Most staff Diddnt even attempt to engage with patients or talk to them. There was no opportunity to discuss how you were feeling and upon asking to speak to staff I was repeatedly told "later", that later never came. I Diddnt even know who my named nurse was untill 3 days before I left, thwy only made themselves clear then because they were required to discuss my discharge with me. The ward rules state weekly meetings with your named nurse, that Diddnt happen for any patients. The worst part was the consultant, Dr Agell. There truly is no way of describing this man, it wasnt juat that he lacked compassion, he completely lacked emotion! You were never in a meeting with him for longer than 3minutes,he wanted you in and out as quickly as possible with no care for how you felt. He did not listen to patients, repeatedly stated he knew better despite having met patients for no longer than 10 minutes across their whole stay. And he would take patients off medication with no warning and non conversation, medication that was helping, leaving patients to go into complete crisis. I have since found out from a consultant psychiatrist In the community that he is famous for doing this and has a reputation for his lack of care. I would not reccomend him if he was the last consultant on earth. This unit is simply a place they put you in, do nothing and then discharge you a week later.
The only members of staff who made any effort to care and help were the assistant psychologists who sadly only came for half an hour every few days, the occupational therapist and a couple of nurses.
