Review of 3C Short Stay Ward - SBH written by a patient
1st June 2018

The clinical care was outstandingly good and clearly a very good team in the cardiac unit. There were, however, several areas of concern in the hospital, most of which would be easily remediable -- (a) The exits for the hospital are very poorly indicated, and they often look similar to doors from other departments etc. Working throughout my life with the visually impaired, I can say that there is no way that such a person would be able to find them. (b) We were surprised that the stairs are hard to locate in the KGV building, and also that they are not usable by the public. Not only is the exercise better for the public, but also the lifts in the KGV building do not appear to have sufficient capacity for the traffic. (c) We were amazed that there were no decaffeinated beverages available on the cardiac wards during mealtimes (apart from water) -- especially as I was in for treatment of cardiac arrhythmias!! (d) The morning discharge procedure on the ward was bizarre, and in no way is compliant with privacy regulations and governance! Namely, (i) People being discharged from the ward were herded into a room marked "departure room" (perhaps not the best name for a cardiac ward!). (ii) A nurse -- who, in fairness, did give her name -- announced that she was not feeling well, as she had overdone it the previous night. (iii) She then read out various patient names and wandered off to get the notes (many of which turned out not to be the correct ones). (iv) She then started speaking to a particular patient and their relatives (but in front of everybody) -- detailing at full volume what they had done, what they were taking in the way of medicines, and when they would be seen. I therefore know that a particular man -- I could give his name -- of a given birthdate, had an implantable defibrillator (ICD) inserted onto the left side of his chest the day before, and the medications he is taking!!! (v) When she came to myself, she did not get things right -- but could not seem to grasp what had been arranged. We therefore left as soon as reasonably possible and stated that we would sort things out (follow-up appointments) later. (vi) In the "departure room" there was a complete list of admissions for the day before -- left lying around on the side table -- so we know the names, ages and details of the several admissions to that particular cardiac ward the day before; in current regulations quite a significant breach of governance. Once again, many thanks to the staff for a great treatment -- but please address the various issues raised. I look forward to visible signs at my future visits and the ability to run up the stairs to keep the heart going longer!!

Review of Francis Fraser ward - SBH written by a patient
31st May 2018

The treatment I received from Kent, David and Luis was outstanding. Sadly I spend a great deal of my time at hospitals now due to multiple complex health conditions and have had some appalling experiences. Not on Frances Fraser though, where nothing was too much trouble for the three chaps, everything was explained fully and the care and compassion they showed towards me during a very long 11 hour day was second to none! They also treated me with great dignity and nothing was too much trouble. They behaved like this with every single patient that was there throughout the day. Great professionals and brilliant advert for their profession! Many thanks guys!!

Review of 4A Cardiac Surgery - SBH written by a patient
21st May 2018

I cannot praise the staff on Ward 4A enough! They were consistently attentive to my every need and kind & friendly. Their cheerful manner definitely helped my recovery. I was so impressed by their professionalism, hard work and absolute dedication. It was the first time I had been in hospital in my 63 years and they made the whole experience so much easier than I thought it would be. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for the amazing way they looked after me after my triple bypass.

I think it's missing a review the amount of time we have to spend in the hospital. I waited for 3 hours to do an ultrasound exam who took literally 2 minutes (and was done in only one of my breasts, simply because I had a pain at only on one of them, wasn't it better to do both?!). I don't think it's respectful to patients to wait for 3 hours to do an ultrasound. I was adviced that this happens every day by one of the staff members. Why scheduling appointments so close to the others? A simple admin change could avoid this annoying experience I had. No cost, no nothing, simply better appointment management. Other comments: all doctors are always in a rush to finish the appointment, bad signage to find where to go inside the hospital, my letter came after my appointment. Don't say sorry if you are not. :) Thanks!

My name is Dionysios Martinis and on the 21st of March I had a mitral valve replacement surgery in St Barts Hospital. Unfortunately during the anaesthesia procedure I had a cardiac arrest which could have been fatal. It was thanks to Cardiothoracic surgeon Professor Rakesh Uppal skills’s and expertise that I am still here. Everyone says that its is a miracle I am still alive but I know that it is his miracle and I really want to sincerely thank him for everything. I would like also to express my gratitude to his surgical team for their support and especially to Dr. Thanos Antoniou for his caring and concern he has shown me during all this difficult time and the great support he offered to my family. Furthermore I am most grateful to the amazing doctors and nurses of the ECMO team in the ICU Ward 6A for their lifesaving excellent care they provided to me following the operation and the support and encouragement they offered during my recovery and rehabilitation. St Barts Hospital should be very proud of his doctors and nurses because they really make the difference. Me and my family thank you so much and will be forever grateful.

My wife had appointment on Brest clinic at 1:50pm. Doctor see my wife on time and send us to ultrasound scan. While we waiting there we realize that there were more than enough staff to serve patient. Staff manager lady was sitting on staff canteen all the time we were there. We wait there more than three hour. My wife is 7 months pregnant and no one care about her. They are faces but honestly worthless crowd. The reason I am frustrated is that this people get wages from our tax money even as an immigrant I pay fees to NHS for treatment as well. NHS is not struggling for resources or anything it struggling because they have one of the worse and lazy staff members

It is all very positive, hospital immaculate and staff very caring and precise, the technicalities of the procedure were explained in layman's terms which I could understand more clearly as medical language can be overwhelming.
