The staff could improve their care of patients by actually doing what they state in their leaflet and by listening to the patients' carer and/or family and acting on what they hear rather than completely ignoring everything. During my mother's 4 week stay she benefitted from group therapy and eating in the dining room just 2 times. The lounge was not used at all. The rest of the time she was sat in her room with the TV blaring out, or in complete silence. Most times the two hourly comfort round was completed without any feedback from my mother; the person/nurse would stand at the door and just tick off the boxes. On two occasions they were missed: once when her bed was left at a precarious angle because it had been lowered onto the radiator and taken half the radiator off the wall; the second time when we arrived to visit at 3pm to find her just able to open her eyes but not registering anything. She had last been seen at 10am. We were told that the form was often not filled in at the time as they were called to other things! My mother was sent there so that she would have 'the best possible chance of living an independent life'. She ended up having to go back into an acute hospital for 4.5 weeks needing both IV and oral antibiotics. She is now home with us, bed bound!
