I have stayed in and I also have to visit EACU fortnightly. All of the team are so caring and kind. I have 'Paolo' take my bloods as I'm now so difficult to do as my veins are not good. Paolo is always so professional. He makes me feel very at ease and is always reassuring. Please give him some recognition. I've been going there for almost 3 years so have got to know most of the team. They ALL work extremely hard. The spinal team are amazing too. My practitoner 'Jen' is fab and also deserves recognition.

Blue-light admission straight into A&E. 8 people initially caring for me & a CT scan within 15 minutes. Keyhole operation that evening to remove an Ischaemic small intestine issue followed by further abdo op. 2 days later. Care, nursing & medical attention all superb. Discharge on Day 7 & a recall to EACU on Day 10. That was not good & a separate complaint actioned - total contrast to the superb care of the 6-day stay.

The speed of my tests, diagnosis and treatment have been better than my expectations given the situation of the NHS. I feel as a teaching hospital that Royal Sussex is as good a place to find yourself if you are diagnosed with cancer.

The post operative care following the initial surgery was a little remis in my opinion and not enough care and restriction was taken of the elbow joint which may have lead to the fixation failure.

I was admitted unexpectedly and spent a full 4 weeks in this hospital. Half of this time was while a decision was made on my treatment and when there was a space for my operation. Communication was not good between the neurology and oncology teams This included notes being lost and having to be redone. The staff were kind and caring but they were overstretched and understaffed. This meant I moved beds a few times to accommodate new patients. The medical care was good but I definitely had the impression the staffed were stressed. My discharge was poorly handled and I was sent home in my gown and bed socks. No after care for my wound was organised with my surgery or occupational therapy for when I got home, other than physio.

Not helped by pt.opposite me in the bay testing positive to Covid the morning after her transfer. We became a Covid ward. Three lockdowns and nobody seemed to know what to do to prevent infection ie masks when not by bed space if patient or if you were infected. Nurses were new, not bad but did not seem to have a want to learn or there was not obvious teaching except for epidurals which was always by most senior nurse on. HO were overwhelmed and could not follow ward round info. Meds from pharmacy were not provided and my prescription was signed as checked by a pharmacist but no pharmacist did ward check with me which would of meant that I would of gone home with at least some of the meds that the consultant asked for and others that were meant to be routine might of been written up without me continuously having to ask eg PPI. I did not at anytime feel people cared for me I tried not to make a scene at any time and was therefore ignored this was not helped by being lumped in to the Covid ward. Two people positive at start of admission 4 by end of 4 days. Would of saved money to isolate the original pair and not extend the other patient stay as they caught Covid. When Consultant on ward round asked what I would like to do, I said go home. If I had been NIC I would have fought to keep me. I was not ready to go home I had not eaten for 4 days, food was appalling for anyone but limited for lactose free pt. no one checked my looses which had increased nobody prescribe Imodium despite the consultant saying for two days in a row I should be on it. I had to ask for three days for a PPI to be prescribed despite being told for an obese women with an epidural who had had major surgery this should be routine. I left the ward completely unprepared not helped by there being nobody to ring at the hospital for advice except NIC. When I rang, requesting advice about wound infection and bleeding she was no help at all I am a nurse so obviously I had more idea of bad practice than most but if I was a normal patient I would of felt abandoned and totally lost on level 9. The Stoma team was brilliant and one regular night nurse was fabulous and one HCA was also really good but this was the exception. Newly qualified nurses seemed lost spent 5 minutes doing obs. but 25 minutes recording them on the computer by that time had forgotten anything you had asked them to find out or fetch for you. Nobody answered buzzars. The whole experience, except for the few nurse I have mentioned, the Stoma team and surgeons, pre op.and theatre and recover staff has left me quite traumatised and although I know I have to go back in for a reversal I am not looking forward to it. Just a small point being able to leave a message for the digestive disorders surgical team via the secretaries would go along way to helping communications when the patient has left the ward, the nurses give no information on who to contact with a surgical related query ie wound infection when you have left the ward and the surgical secretary just does not have an answer phone.

I had a vein cauterised. The consultant & staff were wonderful & talked me through all aspects of the procedure. I had a follow up call too Only one suggestion. Getting myself down from the top level afterwards without help meant that I spent at of time asking for directions Everyone was lovely

The whole team were brilliant throughout. I would say that the ward was unstaffed as there was only one nurse. After the surgery I rang my bell and no one came. I needed to go to the toilet so my friend took he. I spoke to a cleaner who got a nurse from another ward who came to say the nurse in my ward was having a break so I would have to wait until she came back! I understand that she needed a break but I had very recently come back from surgery and needed her help. The other thing which wasn’t good was the sandwich that I was offered!! White bread with chicken and mayo but it was an edible. I pound it quite shocking that as someone that had just had surgery that this was the food offered! Apart from that I was treated so well by all members of staff. I was very emotional before and after the surgery and ALL staff were kind caring and showed real affection towards me…
