I recently spent 6 nights in the H2 Urology ward after bowel/bladder surgery and was very glad to come home. Most of the staff worked incredibly hard but, were clearly understaffed and could not therefore provide a reasonable level of care. They were often late with medication resulting in patients being unnecessarily in pain sometimes for up to an hour. I witnessed this for myself and the 3 other ladies in my ward. Twice my overnight urine collection bag overflowed on to the floor because they did not have time to check the bags regularly. On one occasion this was quickly mopped up with a cotton bed pad at about 5am, the floor was not washed for another 36 hours. There was also a soiled bed pan of blood/urine left on one of the patient toilets for 3 whole days. The surface of my bed table from which I ate and drank was not wiped down once during my 6 day stay. Most of the staff were very hard working and kind but, some became quickly agitated if I dared to ask twice for something. One lady opposite me who was extremely poorly was told by the doctors around 9am that she could have her first drink of water after a long recovery from surgery. By 10.30 she still hadn't been given a drink - I had to ask twice on her behalf to get her a beaker of water which she finally got around 11.15! There was also 2 nurses who were very stern and unkind, I was OK because I could stand up for myself but I overheard a few harsh words towards the older ladies. The hospital trust should be aware that this ward is not working efficiently and they should not be taking advantage of the hardworking staff who could end up making dangerous mistakes because they are so exhausted.PLEASE SORT THIS OUT ASAP!!
