Review of Queen’s - Accident & Emergency
6th March 2024

I came to A&E with severe chest pain that was shooting down my left arm. I was sent to UTC to begin with with just an ECG. The doctor that saw me was very busy so it’s understandable that he was in a rush, but he decided I did not need any bloods. This is significant as I have a history of blood clots, heart problems and pulmonary hypertension and he did not even do a d dimer or troponin with that history. Then he spoke to the med reg who then proceeded to say I did not need to be seen and did not need any bloods or scans. I had to push to be seen and to have bloods taken and it is extremely hard to advocate for yourself when you are in that much pain. I was completely disregarded and told there was nothing wrong with me and should go home and monitor even though I had a significant history and did not have any proper investigations done. I also noted that at the point of my previous blood clots I had normal ECGs and a negative d dimer. At this point I had to be insistent and told the UTC doctor to call back the Med Reg. At this point the med reg said there’s only a 0.0001% chance I could have a clot on blood thinners - a statistic that I am unsure that can be verified. I insisted once again and then was reluctantly sent to SDEC. Upon entering SDEC they say me straight away as they realised it was serious, here they actually did bloods and ECG and when my heart rate shot up to 145 they moved me to Majors A. SDEC and Majors were amazing. But I will say that the wrong persons notes were sent over from SDEC to Majors A under my name as I had a similar surname to another patient and it caused a great deal of confusion and I had to step in to clarify that I am not 34 years old but 22. They were ready to send me home because of this error which could have killed me. Upon admission it was discovered that I have a blood clot in my pulmonary vein and my left atrium, which would have killed me if I had been sent home and if I had not stood up for myself. I have already spent 10 days and might need to spend longer due to how serious it is but I was not taken seriously in A&E and it was extremely difficult. I have a good grasp over my health and having a background in health means I can keep up with things but I worry about the patients who might not be able to advocate for themselves

Suggested improvements
Listen to your patients, don’t interrupt. If they are telling that they are having severe chest pain don’t disregard them as it could kill them.

By ambulance, I was rapidly transferred with blue lights & sirens arriving at Queen's Hospital, Romford from Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow with active stroke symptoms, your amazing nurses, doctor, porters and radiologists were all so very kind, caring, considerate, efficient, responsive, reassuring and respectful with me at all times.

Suggested improvements
Nothing.

All staff were excellent.

Suggested improvements
Took so long. I was moved from A&E where I had a bed and then taken to eSDEC where I was put in a chair for 2 1/2 hours before it was realised I needed my leg elevated.

Every Stagf member that I had contact with was courteous/well mannered and totally professional.I think that(and I posted on facebook)NHS hospitals are the last bastion of politeness and good manners.

Suggested improvements
I found the A&E department after a long walk to get to,which especially was not a pleasant experience when you are short of breath, have chest pains, and a very low energy level.

I could not have expected a better health service in my stays in hospital. I was totally satisfied and discharged feeling much better than when I went in.

Suggested improvements
Sending results to my GP much quicker.

From what I remember everyone involved with me treated me with care respect and kindness. I can not express my gratitude to you all for the treatment received. Thank you. Jim McCluskey

Suggested improvements
I know some things can be improved but only when staff are working at a normal pace and not under the extreme pressure and stress being expected from them.

Because I was ill I was sleeping a lot and missed the tea trolley. So in 12 hours had 1 tea, 2 cups of water and a packet of biscuits despite suffering dehydration and being hungry

Suggested improvements
If a patient is sleeping get a nurse or someone to wake them up... they are quick enough to do it when they wanna do Obs

I was taken in by ambulance and then waited hours before a dr saw me, I could not stand straight or walk due to a sudden issue with my back and unfortunately due to the strike on I was unable to have any scans or tests done on my back and I was sent home with diclofenic for my pain as my prescription of morphine was not helping. I had to wait until I could see my gp a few days later to request a mri scan be booked. I have 3 bulbous discs and curvature of the spine so wish I could of been seen properly

Suggested improvements
I’m not sure

Arrived at approx 02:00 Was left in all 12 hours nurses were busy, just left for hours and hours till I could see a dr no information given to me about possibility of symptoms of concussion the need for a Ct scan .. moved from where I was by a nurse who was visibly annoyed that me and the other 4 patients had been put in there !!! Left in the corridor no one came to see me my husband had to go and check what was happening .. whether I needed a head scan when he arrived. Then waiting again Ct scan then results .. which I understand .. then watched and listened to the dr request one of the sisters to clean and inspect my wound .. she refused said she had more important things to do ... then eventually a charge nurse said he would do it, he and a nurse who was with him decided it had to be glued rather then stitched so first they said about cutting/ shaving my head and I refused so the nurse painstakingly separated the hair around it .and cut a few strands . I heard her say to the make nurse she wasn't trained to glue my head but could assist. They then between then held my head and pushed the sides of the laceration/wound together and then he put the glue on and then I heard him say sorry and he had glued his glove a tip of a finger too it so he then had to cut it off and has left a tip of plastic glove in my glued head .. and made some feeble excuse saying it will probably drop out it's self . I had concussion grade 1 I was in shock so didn't get angry but now am very unhappy about the treatment I received . I work for the NHS I know we are all under pressure .. I realise my injury was not as serious as some, but it was more serious then others .. I saw two nurses to speak to in eight hours once when I said I was in pain could I take anything ? And once to take my observations for the last hour and a half to two hours I just watched 4 of them not sure if nurses or hca 's chatting .. one said to me briefly as she was going off duty the drs are in handover you should see someone soon .. that was at 7 40. I was seen by a dr the first time since I’d arrived at approx 10:15 . My husband had to suggest to the dr that was I going to have a head scan ? Then after checking my eyes he reluctantly agreed that perhaps I should. I understand everyone is under pressure, I know the system .. I know the hospital I used to work there .. but for those who don’t .. the very elderly, dementia patients , very unwell , infirm , anxious, children , mums in their own with babies it is and seemed a scary horrible environment .. no information given .. I had blood taken no explanation as to why ? if that’s standard treatment for all patients, then explain why ?

Suggested improvements
All of it .., explain , inform , be transparent about delay give realistic time frames, what treatment to expect , what you should tell them about your condition … your staff should be careful how they speak to each other in the earshot if patients and family and to each other when with a patient Try to rectify mistakes .. not excuse them, is it acceptable to have a piece of rubber glove left in the wound .. it is healthy can it cause infection ? Follow the example of the one lovely caring member of staff I saw the whole visit a lovely philipino HCA /nurse who was very caring, reassuring and helpful going out of her way to assist me. I had realised I couldn’t get the wound wet and my hair was rock hard and matted with dried blood and my neck was covered and I asked if she could give me a wet wipe as I knew it had to be softened cleaned for them to glue the wound she came with several tiny refilled bowls of water and cloth and helped me untangle my hair of the worst of the dried blood and on my neck she was amazing .. she kept popping back to check how I was getting on with cleaning it between what she had been asked to do , her act of kindness and care made the rest of the staff look worse then I thought they were before There seemed to be a sense of apathy like everything was a lot of bother to them .. I get they are understaffed .. under pressure but there was a lot of people standing around not letting patients know what was happening and worst of all they think this is ok .. I got almost growled at by one nurse when I asked could I have some water to take more painkillers From this experience I would be very reluctant to Let my mother or any of my family go to A&E without being accompanied by someone who has an idea of what should be happening ..all in all the experience was not great I will always stick up for queens but you need to improve on your handling of patients it’s a shambles
