I spent over 24 hours in SDEC and watched the nurses go from patient to patient (including myself) undertaking observations and not once did they clean the blood pressure cuff or sats probe between each patient use. I watched a night sister strip a dirty bed without gloves or an apron and then remake the bed with linen she had just dropped on the floor. I also observed the attending medic sit on the bed of the patient opposite just before he sat on my bed during my consultation. Not once did I observe anyone use the hand gel located at the end of the beds in my bay before attending to their duties. I was offered breakfast and received toast from an ungloved hand taken from a compartment on a hot drinks trolley. In the current COVID climate this is both shocking and unacceptable.

Response from Queen's Hospital

Thank you for submitting this feedback. We would like to apologize for negative experience you had while in our care on the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit. We are working closely with our nursing and medical teams to continuously improve our standards of care, and your feedback is essential in helping us to get the care right. We have made it a point to have antiseptic wipes on each of our observation machines to support the team to ensure that decontamination is occurring. We are reinforcing the strict use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to all of our staff. Staff have been encouraged to hand wash as well as use alcohol gel provided. Breakfast on the unit should be served with gloves and aprons and we apologies if this standard was not met. The above concerns are being monitored by the Senior Sisters (Ward Managers) and supported by the Matron
