23rd February 2021

I was scheduled for surgery at Queens hospital on 16.02.21. Prior to the surgery taking place I needed to have a blood test carried out the day before so that my blood could be tested ready for me to have my surgery first thing the next day. I waited 2.5 hours to have my blood taken on 15.02.21 at Sunrise B in Queen's. I understand that the hospital is busy however despite waiting this long, when I arrived for my surgery on 16.02.21 I was told that there was no record of my blood test from the day before so I would need to have another test taken before my surgery. This second test was carried out and I was waiting for several hours before anyone saw me again to explain what the delay was as I had arrived at Sunrise B at 0645 expecting to be the first surgery of the day, as planned. When another lady came to me to take yet another blood test, she explained that the second blood test hadn't had enough blood taken so the lab were unable to test it, therefore this was causing a delay in my surgery. A third blood test was then carried out and I wasn't taken down for my surgery until 1310. I cannot fault the team that helped me with my surgery, they apologised for the delay despite it not being their fault that the bloods were not taken correctly. They explained what was going to happen and treated me extremely well when I was in their care, they even helped to answer all of the questions I had before I returned to the ward. The porters were taking a long time to arrive after my surgery and it was two people from the team who carried out my surgery that ended up taking me back to Sunrise B as they felt sorry for me being left waiting in the corridor, please if you can pass on my thanks to these two men who were very kind and helpful to me, I really appreciated it. The doctor who carried out my surgery was also very helpful and I am grateful to him for completing my surgery successfully and ensuring that all of my questions were answered.

Suggested improvements
Completing my blood test correctly the first time, the day before my surgery, rather than needing to have this done three times and having my treatment delayed. Better communication to inform patients of what is happening with their care. I had to wait a long time to receive any pain relief following my surgery so was uncomfortable for a long time before any painkillers were given to me.
