Review of Queens - Childrens & Young Peoples Assessment Unit (CYPAU)
17th April 2024

Everyone in the department tried to make my sons hospital experience as positive as possible. A special mention to Chantel on the play team who was a god send when he had to have a blood test- my son was extremely traumatised from already having cannulas and she really tried to help the situation. Blessing and Faith nurses were also incredible at their job, Blessing was so helpful especially with the discharge. Blessing and Faith both tried to ensure my son was as comfortable as possible when completing obs etc. Helen who I think was the cleaner came in to see my son before, after and during her shift, she made my sons experience so amazing and she is a complete asset to your team.

Suggested improvements
Doctors kept coming to review each day without reading my sons notes at all, so I had keep fighting each day even though we had a diagnosis from the dermatologists.

Review of Queen’s - Accident & Emergency

I visited A&E at what was a very traumatic time but the nurses and clinicians were so very kind to me and seemed to show genuine care and concern. The team involved in my care were very responsive and worked swiftly as I was in excruciating pain. I have to give a special mention to Emma in A&E as she made a big impression with her care and compassion.

Suggested improvements
Maybe not mention in front of me disposal of what I had expelled

Staff were very kind and friendly. The Consultant kept me well informed throughout the procedure.

Suggested improvements
I don't think there is a need for improvement. I would like the staff to know they are reassuring and friendly and try to put you at ease.

Waited 14hrs to be seen by a doctor! Then another 7hrs to complete tests. Total of 21hrs without possibility to lay down, been told how long it will take, nobody asked if hungry nor provided food, arrogant nurses. One doctor for tens of patients. If this is the NHS you are so proud of then you should be ashamed. Appalling.

Suggested improvements
Treat people with emergency and timely attention- it’s emergency department !!! 21 hrs is insane and inhumane

Absolutely horrendous - 16 hours in eSDEC - 79 years old sitting on an uncomfortable chair! A more comfy chair after 11 hours which still couldnt be called comfortable! no medication was given - asked for paracetomol 3 times before getting given any. Bloods were taken then when the result was back an ECG was said to be needed - didnt go presenting with chest pain - and wasnt advised why an ECG was needed. Another blood test was done 10 hours later ti see if the ECG was still needed.. The ECG was done anyway an hour or so after that blood test. 5 hours later still no results, noone seemed to know why and then were told we could go home and the results would be sent to mums GP. Still no idea what was wrong with her and 16 hours wasted - She takes regular medication but noone asked her what so she didnt get the neds until i went home and got them - after the paramedics saying we didnt need to take them with us as would all be got from mums records and she would be given them at the hospital! The whole experience was horrible, to see old age people on trolleys alone in the corridors was heartbreaking. Queens needs someone to step in and dort it out - no wonder people are dying! We wasnt kept updated with any information at all.

Suggested improvements
The whole hospital - especially A&E needs a massive shake up! Maybe the GP's going back to working normally would be a BIG help! i know this area is massively over populated without adequate services but its beyond anything I have ever seen!

Being moved around the A&E departments is frustrating and waiting so long that the staff change and Dr’s have different opinions and plans. I had attended for the second time in a week, yet the dr refused to look at medication I was given on the previous attendance as he “didn’t have time”! Bloods were lost, it was not reassuring in doing things efficiently

Suggested improvements
To be kept in one department so things are not missed/lost

Spent over 30 hours in a+e, at times, the communication was good but other times it was patchy. I.e. After being told I'd had a heart attack and would need a cardiac monitor, I was left in a chair for hours without it being set up. When I asked a nurse. I was made to feel I shouldn't have asked. Also told I was moving to a ward and they a ere looking for a chair- then just nothing for a long time.

Suggested improvements
Communicate more.
