I came into QA for a planned procedure in the Endoscopy Department. Firstly what a fabulous team. I was there from 8.30am until nearly 8pm so watched this team in action. The section closed at 7pm however although a bed for me was promised the ward wasn't ready. Two nurses had to stay behind with me until I was transferred. Despite several phone calls I wasn't actually moved until 7.45pm. One nurse had to telephone to make arrangements for her children. The other one wasn't even supposed to be on duty, she volunteered to stay. I was transferred to Recovery 1, where there was one member of staff trying to look after 12 beds with patients like me coming in from surgery. One shift of staff had left and the ones rostered on had not arrived. Eventually staff were transferred from another ward. As my bed was near the nurses station I could see and hear what was happening. Two very young nurses came on duty and I can not say how fabulous these two were. Even though they were unfamiliar with the department and where everything was they immediately got stuck in and worked well together. They very patiently took me off to the toilet I don't know how many times and responded to my buzzer and requests immediately. I've been in hospital many times and I know good nurses when I see them. Staff Nurse Jade Montalban and Health Care Support Worker Carmen Fitzgerald. Thank you. The next morning Will came on duty, I was a bit woozy still from the operation but I could hear and see how he interacted with the staff. He had a lovely manner and sense of humour but very efficient, especially when I was again being transferred to Ward C5. Ward C5, a different place altogether. Mis-Match of Staff and I have to say on the whole my experience wasn't bad, it just could've been better. I found it strange that an older Healthcare Assistant bossed the nurses about. She was very loud and into everything and everyone's business which I felt was too intrusive, plus she was so busy doing this she left the bedmaking trolley on the ward and missed two out of the four beds unmade. One ray of sunshine was Jacqui who accompanied the doctors on their rounds and did the canulars. She was very good at explaining what and why things were being done. Could she please train the others? Half the nurses were efficient but when asked a question didn't have any answers or attempted to get them. Some came on duty and introduced themselves others came in and put their names on the board behind you - where patients especially on drips can not see. As always in hospital when it comes to what the doctor says to you and relays to the staff via notes is not always the same. For example, I was told that I was able to go home the next morning and no longer needed the drip. When he'd gone the staff came to set up a new bag, on telling her that I no longer needed she said they hadn't been told and she would record that I refused treatment. To be fair by that time I didn't care what she recorded. They are all extremely busy but sometimes I got the feeling that some worked and cared a lot more than the others.
