Following various tests at NGH I was diagnosed to have an ovarian cyst and had an initial consultation with Mr Gnana Chandram, Gynae Consultant, on 8th March. Having reviewed the various scans, etc he told me that he thought the cyst could be cancerous and that he would make arrangements for an operation to be done as soon as possible to remove it. He then explained in full detail what the operation would entail and the risks involved. At the consultation I found Mr Gnana to be extremely supportive which helped me, and my family, to cope with the situation. The operation was carried out successfully on 30th March. I can only praise the skillful treatment that I received throughout - no-one could ask for better. Mr Gnana and his team were wonderful throughout this challenging time. With thanks - Molly Hanlon I had the operation I was admitted by Mr Gnana Chandram, Gynae Consultant, to have an ovarian cyst removed. The 5 hour operation was carried out on 30th March to remove the cyst which weighed 2 kilos.

The service provided at A&E and particularly at Springfield was fantastic. Yes there was a wait…but that’s ok. I knew I was going to receive care and advice from professional staff. Thank you to the on call ENT consultant who scoped me and reassured me.

My daughter who had just turned 18 needed two cysts removing, so had to stay in the gynaecology ward, which just seemed like an old ward the stuck anyone with any gynaecology issue in. Due to mental health issues that being my daughter is selective mute, ocd and severe anxiety, I stayed with her for the 4 days and nights she was there. And we got a single room. The room didn’t look clean, I brought cleaning stuff with me. I understand the rooms are constantly used but they just look shabby. We were only offered water twice during our stay. I was offered a put me up bed twice by two healthcare assistants. As no one seemed to know I was staying with my daughter due to her mental health issues. The board in the room where stuff can be wrote down about the patient wasn’t filled in, and this would have helped as then the staff would realise she didn’t talk and then not talk at her like she was stupid. She got 3 meals in total while she was there, and it was due to her being forgotten apparently. Again the ward doesn’t seem like a ward people know is there or for overnight cases. There was a shortage of nurses and I was asked where staff members where. The other staff members I don’t know what their roles were as they didn’t explain who they were and the language barrier was sometimes difficult and frustrating. Patients buzzers were going off for ages. We got conflicting information from surgeons, healthcare workers and other staff. No one seemed to read my daughters notes as to her issues as they kept disregarding them which was frustrating my daughter. The hospital seem to have spent money on making the main entrance all nice looking and pleasing to the eye, with the hood air conditioning which the room we were in could have done with. But yet they haven’t used that money for a ward that is small and well used especially for women who are experiencing loss of babies or general women’s problems. The waiting area for the early loss clinic again is clean and looks nice but once you walk down further it’s not like that. It’s false advertising.

I have marked one star because the radiology consultant advised me that I was too old to have my rotator cuff repaired. I went privately at Three Shires Hospital Northampton and the repair was successfully carried out giving me a new lease of life.

The food was a disgrace. I’m gluten free and although there was choice it was limited with no fresh veg and no fresh fruit. In a ten day admission I lost half a stone. All the food was served in microwave dishes with film still on. It was consistently brown. On several occasions there was no gluten free option. On other days no choice at all. In the above ratings what is reflected is the appalling pressure staff were under. I can only be grateful for their excellent care. The poor rating is about the conditions they have to work under

There are some really good and caring doctors and nurses within this establishment, however whilst we are all too aware of how overstretched the NHS has become and how hard staff work there is little excuse for staff to be rude, judgemental and uncaring when it comes to patient care. The A&E department is let down by nurses, some doctors and 1 or 2 senior consultants who treat patients with little to no dignity or respect. If I could name and shame I would! When delivering care you should ALWAYS remember that you only ever get a snap shot of a persons life at that moment in time. The lack of ability to care has disappeared by some nurses in this department and you should consider whether the job you’re doing is right for you anymore. The system is broken but lack of empathy, understanding and poor patient care is not down to the system it is down to certain individuals in the department. Basic nursing skills such as pain management, food and water require little intervention but make such a difference. No one should ever be too busy that they neglect the basic needs of patients. If I was going to die I’d rather do it anywhere than the A&E department in this hospital.
