My myopia that had developed from childhood had progressed to an extent that contact lenses had ceased to be a workable solution. I knew that intraocular lens replacement was a treatment for correcting myopia but this had not been offered as an alternative. Mr Julian Stevens at Moorfields took a different view and, prescribed intraocular lens replacement followed by fine-tuning with surface excimer laser treatment. Such a combination seems to be available only at centres of excellence such as Moorfields where the newest technologies are evaluated. In my case this included a femtosecond laser which reduces the level of trauma experienced by the eye. (This did incur extra expense.). The implantation of prescription lenses corrected my vision to such a good level that I do not feel the need to proceed to excimer laser treatment (although this remains an option).
I went to Mr Acheson's Squint Clinic in May because I wanted surgery to correct a very obvious lazy eye. Since then, at every stage of dealing with the hospital I have been made to regret my decision to seek treatment. The staff were rude and disinterested, there was no discussion over treatment, the admin was useless and I have not even had direct communication with the consultant. Even the toilets were overflowing! Rather than dignity and respect I have been treated with nothing short of contempt and indifference. Here's a leaflet, now shut up, go away and be grateful we saw you at all.
I am so utterly disgusted that I am going private. I simply have no faith in them at all. The standard of treatment I have received reflects incredibly poorly on the professional conduct of the department and the hospital as a whole.
From my experience, I actively recommend this hospital be avoided.
When I was first diagnosed with rapidly advancing cataracts in both eyes by my optician a year ago and was told that no glasses or contact lens solution was possible (after 8 years of wearing a +1D contact lens for reading and near perfect distance vision), I had no hesitation in asking for a referral to Moorfields. Eyes are all they do and they have a worldwide reputation.
I researched my options about different procedures, lenses, surgeons etc. and quickly learned that the skill and expertise of the surgeon is the most important factor in the outcome of eye surgery. A skilled and experienced surgeon knows how to avoid problems in the first place but, if an issue occurs, he or she knows how to get out of trouble. I knew I had to choose the best surgeon for my eyes as it was not cosmetic surgery; it was necessary surgery on unhealthy eyes which seriously affected my quality of life.
I am delighted to confirm that I had cataract eye surgery completed by Julian Stevens at Moorfields on both my eyes about 4 months ago and am absolutely thrilled with the results. My new multifocal lenses are balancing extremely well and I now have perfect vision. Julian is supremely talented, highly professional, charismatic and reassuring. He explains things clearly and comprehensively and leaves you feeling that you are in the safest possible hands. His team, along with the nurses at Moorfields Eye Hospital, provided exceptional service and care from start to finish. I have no doubt that I made the best choice in entrusting my eyes with this amazing surgeon and I cannot recommend him highly enough.
I have been an outpatient at Moorfields for over 25yrs. I go to the Uveitis & Glaucoma clinics on a regular basis. Plus whenever i have flare ups, to A&E.
The staff care is always fantastic. You never feel rushed & you always feel well cared for. I had to go twice in 2 weeks. (Each time a 4hr wait. But i suppose if everyone’s given lots of time, that will add to the waiting time. I would like to give an extra thanks to two staff members. I’ve been having a very emotional time. My mother died a yr ago & any emotional stress brings on my iritis. (Plus i have arthritis), so alot of health problems. When i was telling the staff about this, they were very sympathetic & kind. So thank you to the lovely Nurse ANNA LEE & the lovely Dr QUONG. You both had such a caring manner!!
The real criticism i have is about the ladies toilet. The cleaners do clean them alot. But it must be the patients. I know it can be difficult if your vision’s bad. But there’s no need to leave reams of toilet paper all over the floor. The toilets are often blocked & out of use. I feel this side is getting worse. The patients need to be more respectful & the toilets need to be replaced. But apart from that. It’s a lovely hospital with highly skilled staff.
Moorfields Eye Hospital is an outstanding facility and I highly recommend it to anyone with urgent eye issues. The duty of care is quite high and access to some of the leading Opthomology surgeons and physicians is amazing.
The main thing i liked was the considerate team.. it was very clean and i felt listened to and respected.
Excellent treatment, highly professional and way better results than I anticipated. The team were very supportive throughout and Mr Stevens is nothing short of a miracle worker. I have recommended him many times over and wouldn't hesitate to agree with those who have identified him as one of the best eye surgeons in the world.
Great experience ....... Was very nervous about the whole thing but there really was nothing to worry about. So happy with the result and wished I had had it done many years ago. Thank you Mr. Stevens and all the staff. I'm a very happy lady!
Highly experienced and personable members of staff. Excellent standards of care. The process for testing and diagnosis is broken up into several meetings so patients feel that they are seen to in the shortest possible time. This method helps alleviate the length of waiting time.
This is the most extraordinary item of surgery and surgeon. My sight is a revelation. I can not thank Mr Stevens and the team enough. I am indebted to your ground breaking work.
