Like others have said here, Moorfields are making up their own rules about mask exemption. I am being denied treatment because I cannot afford to pay for a private doctor's exemption letter. NHS GPs do not provide. They do not tell you in letters you need a letter. Absolutely appalling. Am now taking this up with my MP and putting in an official complaint.

Discriminating against the most vulnerable I have a life-threatening condition and rely on regular follow- ups at Moorfield’s. My condition can deteriorate quickly and Moorfield’s has always told me to come back urgently if that happens, because it could be fatal. But since Moorfield’s found out I am exempt from covering my face by way of disability, they have treated me like dirt. First, they refused to let me attend my critical appointment unless I showed a doctor’s exemption letter. There was no warning of this, they only tell you when you get there. They bullied me into paying almost two hundred pounds for a private GP letter – because my NHS GP said they are not doing these letters because Moorfield’s should not be asking for them. And now they have the nerve to say mask-exempt people(i.e. the most vulnerable people) will have phone consults instead. So after being threatened with denial of care because of my disability and pressured into getting an expensive mask exemption letter – something not required by law or government rules, Moorfield’s now says it will offer people with disabilities a reduced level of service. They also will not refund me for my expenses. This means they won’t do physical examinations so won’t be monitoring deterioration of my health. I may lose my vision as a result. How is this lawful or ethical? I have read other reviews saying this discrimination is a breach of the Equality Act, but I am too sick to take it further. Shame on you Moorfields!

Getting a kick out of being as unhelpful as possible I never received the summary letters that are sent out as standard after appointments. One from May and one from Sep 20. I wrote to Moorfields twice to request these and they never responded. I therefore had to write a third time by special delivery asking for the letters. Still nothing. I then wrote a 4th time again by special delivery and explained for the 4th time that I had not received them and that I reasonably required them for my medical record. They finally responded with a very hostile tone and simply said “we’ve already sent the letter”. What possible reason could they have for being so unhelpful unless they derive some sort of sick pleasure from being so nasty to sick people? Why not just send out duplicates? As a result of the hospital’s obstructive attitude, I have no had to make a subject access request – again by special delivery, just to get the letters I am entitled to anyway. It has cost me over £20 in postage thus far. I find the behaviour of these people absolutely despicable.

NHS Patients expected to provide private doctor’s letters as evidence of a disability/medical condition After raising a query, Moorfield’s confirmed in writing that NHS patients are expected to provide “evidence” of a medical condition or disability if unable to wear a mask. The hospital has not published this policy – which is in conflict with govt guidelines- so patients have no prior warning before being turned away from appointments. The hospital has not specified exactly what kind of evidence it is demanding, but since the NHS announced publicly that it will not issue exemption letters, this would have to be a letter from a private doctor at the patient’s own cost. The government guidelines (as published on gov.uk) state: “Those who have an age, health or disability reason to not wear a face covering should not be asked to provide any written evidence of this. Written evidence includes exemption cards.” I had to pay £120 for a letter from a private doctor to enable me to enter an NHS hospital that is treating me for a tumor behind my eye which causes seizures that mean my breathing must be unobstructed at all times. The hospital itself therefore holds evidence of my disability but apparently that is not sufficient proof. Absolute clown world. Not only is Moorfield's breaching the givernment guidelines, it is breaching the Equality Act 2010. Perhaps Moorfields would like to give us all yellow stars.

I was on hold for 1 hour and 50 minutes, so just under 2 hours, trying to get through to Moorfields At St Georges. There is absolutely NO justification for this. We have jobs too you know, that’s 2 hours out of my working day. The man who answered was rude and belligerent to boot when I quite reasonably asked if there was any reason for this. I lawfully recorded the call so can prove everything.

Just a few words of appreciation for the service I received at Moorfields At Ealing Hospital on 10/03/2020. At my age, having an eye surgery first time in my life presented a lot of anxiety. I was put at ease by the comforting assurance of ALL the Staff in Brunel ward, Orange Wing. I had a lot of apprehension prior to my visit to the ward; perhaps having to spend the whole day in pain etc. But my surgery which involved the procedure – Pterigium excision & conj auto-graft went very smoothly. I was discharged before midday. My sincere Gratitude to all the staff in the ward to name but a few: Mr Martin Watson, Ester Papamichael, Cecilia Kati, Oksana Wilkinson, Victoria Decson, Bala, Ela, Sue, Brian and Lydia. Please keep up the excellent service you keep on providing to the community so tirelessly day in day out. Kind Regards, Mr Purshottam Sonecha (One Happy Patient)

Had quite possibly the worst and most badly organised treatment ever. I wish I hadn’t paid privately to have treatment here as I’m sure it would have been far better organised on the NHS. My appointments were cancelled or never booked by the surgeon’s secretary, I was given no information about my surgery and I’ve never encountered somewhere so utterly disorganised. The surgery and hospital are poorly equipped to deal with patients with mental health conditions and I was given no support regarding this. Utterly utterly terrible and would recommend you highly avoid this hospital if you’re going private. What’s worse is that if anything goes wrong with your surgery you get charged even more to see the surgeon for follow ups!!

My myopia that had developed from childhood had progressed to an extent that contact lenses had ceased to be a workable solution. I knew that intraocular lens replacement was a treatment for correcting myopia but this had not been offered as an alternative. Mr Julian Stevens at Moorfields took a different view and, prescribed intraocular lens replacement followed by fine-tuning with surface excimer laser treatment. Such a combination seems to be available only at centres of excellence such as Moorfields where the newest technologies are evaluated. In my case this included a femtosecond laser which reduces the level of trauma experienced by the eye. (This did incur extra expense.). The implantation of prescription lenses corrected my vision to such a good level that I do not feel the need to proceed to excimer laser treatment (although this remains an option).

I went to Mr Acheson's Squint Clinic in May because I wanted surgery to correct a very obvious lazy eye. Since then, at every stage of dealing with the hospital I have been made to regret my decision to seek treatment. The staff were rude and disinterested, there was no discussion over treatment, the admin was useless and I have not even had direct communication with the consultant. Even the toilets were overflowing! Rather than dignity and respect I have been treated with nothing short of contempt and indifference. Here's a leaflet, now shut up, go away and be grateful we saw you at all. I am so utterly disgusted that I am going private. I simply have no faith in them at all. The standard of treatment I have received reflects incredibly poorly on the professional conduct of the department and the hospital as a whole. From my experience, I actively recommend this hospital be avoided.

When I was first diagnosed with rapidly advancing cataracts in both eyes by my optician a year ago and was told that no glasses or contact lens solution was possible (after 8 years of wearing a +1D contact lens for reading and near perfect distance vision), I had no hesitation in asking for a referral to Moorfields. Eyes are all they do and they have a worldwide reputation. I researched my options about different procedures, lenses, surgeons etc. and quickly learned that the skill and expertise of the surgeon is the most important factor in the outcome of eye surgery. A skilled and experienced surgeon knows how to avoid problems in the first place but, if an issue occurs, he or she knows how to get out of trouble. I knew I had to choose the best surgeon for my eyes as it was not cosmetic surgery; it was necessary surgery on unhealthy eyes which seriously affected my quality of life. I am delighted to confirm that I had cataract eye surgery completed by Julian Stevens at Moorfields on both my eyes about 4 months ago and am absolutely thrilled with the results. My new multifocal lenses are balancing extremely well and I now have perfect vision. Julian is supremely talented, highly professional, charismatic and reassuring. He explains things clearly and comprehensively and leaves you feeling that you are in the safest possible hands. His team, along with the nurses at Moorfields Eye Hospital, provided exceptional service and care from start to finish. I have no doubt that I made the best choice in entrusting my eyes with this amazing surgeon and I cannot recommend him highly enough.
