My father was transferred from another hospital for rehabilitation and stayed in Liberton for 7 weeks. From the minute he entered the care he received was second to none. Every member of staff from support staff to the consultant were dedicated and professional. We as a family were supported through the difficult time and my father felt safe and cared for until he sadly passed away in the hospital.

Our mum was admitted to Liberton Hospital after a fall and subsequent operation both in The Royal Infirmary . All members of the hospital staff who have cared for her have treated and cared for her do well . Although busy and full in a lot of the time staff have treated her with kindness , compassion and respect . We are very pleased with the care she has received whilst in Liberton Hospital and the food and physio she has received . A huge thanks to all in ward 4.

My mother in law was in ward 1b for 4 months and we were so impressed by the fantastic care she received. Fiona and the team provided care with compassion, dignity and respect. The hospital was also spotless with outstanding hygiene throughout.. We are forever grateful for the support they provided to our family . We were sad to say goodbye when she left for residential care.

My 91 year old Aunt recently had a 6 week stay in Liberton. There were good, caring hard working staff there however, they were undermined by the few who were lazy, disrespectful, showed very little empathy and on occasion, were downright cruel in their actions, or lack of them. From what I observed as a visitor, the idea of choice, dignity and person centred care were often completely lacking. There appeared to be a lack of discipline, perhaps due to lack of effective supervision. Staff openly wandered about the ward on their mobile phones, and swearing seemed to be an acceptable behaviour. Meanwhile, patients were trying to alert staff to their need for assistance, but were left unnoticed. ( individual buzzers were not working) . The idea of rehab seemed to be a term not known to many of the staff, with patients left sitting on a chair for hours with no encouragement to do any kind of exercise, even seated. At a time when the pressures are so great on the NHS, I feel uncomfortable writing this review, however I feel very strongly that this needs to be done. I now have a 91 year old Aunt who is worrying about the fellow patients she has left behind, still living through what she describes as "the worst experience of her life". She says she will never go back into Liberton and that she would rather die. The contrast with her 1st 10 days in hospital at the ERI, was stark and she has nothing but praise for the treatment she received there. I would like this to be dealt with as an official complaint and would appreciate someone getting back to me to discuss further. I obviously accept that this may not be until the current crisis has passed.

My gran broke her hip, had a half hip replacement in another hospital. Was moved to liberton, had little to no help eating, no communication from staff for physio, eating or progress. Tried to send her into a home before the 2 month mark saying she wasn't making the progress they wanted, they weren't even trying! Other patients in the ward weren't getting any help. Another patient asked what she was getting for her tea and was told to just wait and see forcefully. I, myself would like to know what I would be eating. I'd be here all day if I carried on with complaints. Not impressed or happy with the staff at all.

My mother H Thomson was in Ward 1 Liberton Hospital for four weeks. From the minute she arrived she was treated with kindness and total respect. You might this to be the case in every hospital ward in every hospital. Would that it were. The nurses from the most senior to the students to the care workers were First Class. Ward 1 is a Beacon of Goodd Practice. As family members we were also given first class support and kindness. Mum passed away peacefully she could not have received better end of life care. All nursing staff were totally attentive to her needs. I and all family cannot praise the whole team highly enough. Thanks to Mariam, ward manager, Staffordshire nurses Chelsea, Mary, Sarah, Fiona , care staff Rebecca, Angela , Amanda all day and night staff whose names we did not get. You are all wonderful. I hope the proposed changes do not lead to a break up of the excellent nursing teams who we observed showing seamless team working, kindness and compassion to the patients in their care. When you know that your relative is receiving such a high standard of care , you can be reassured and relax . Some other wards in the nearby general hospital could learn a huge amount from this team. Grateful thanks from me on behalf of the family. Mary Davidson

A huge THANK YOU to all the staff on wards 7 & 1 in Liberton Hospital Edinburgh. My mother W. Fielding was admitted to Liberton after a fall that resulted in a broken hip and a 2 week stay at the RIE. From the moment my mother entered Liberton Hospital the staff were professional, understanding and so kind. They asked me a ton of questions about her; her health, likes and dislikes, what would make her happy, calm and much more, this really gave them an understanding of the woman behind the broken hip. She was admitted for rehabilitation but they addressed so many other health issues that had plagued her for years. They not only got her mobile with confidence, by the time she left hospital (6 weeks) she was in better health than we ever dreamed was possible. She also left with an 8 week course of outpatient’s appointments at their day hospital and a fabulous care package with equipment in her own home to make her life as comfortable and secure as possible. Even the hospital layout is brilliant, huge wards divided into three smaller sub wards with 4 beds a piece, with loads of room for privacy. This allows the staff at all time to see all the patients and as importantly allows the patients to always see a member of staff, so reassuring when you are elderly, ill and sometimes afraid. To just say ‘thank you’ is not enough and sorry if I miss yours name but thanks so much. Dr Coutts, staff nurses Louise, Janice, Ruth & Jennifer, Physio’s Claudia & Carol Ann, OT’s Casey, Louise & Rebecca, nurses Lynda, Liz, Faye, Janet Smith, Felli Raeburn, Yetti, Duncan and the lovely man who always has a joke when coming around with the patients cup of tea. So grateful, Tricia Bagheri.
