Review of Accident and Emergency LGI (1280)
22nd August 2022

After a recent dreadful experience at St James Hospital I cannot fault the service my husband received in A/E Jubilee wing LGI on Wednesday (th August 2022. The ambulance crew booked him in at reception & a nurse came to see him within a few minutes. After a Blood pressure check she quickly found him a cubicle where he stayed for the rest of the time he was there. He was seen by several staff at different times including a lovely lady doctor. At no time was he rushed into any decision, everything was explained patiently in detail. The doctor was very worried at one point that he could have a life threatening condition, but quickly requested different tests which, thankfully, ruled that out. Eventually, after several hours he was allowed to return home by ambulance, which was arranged within minutes. I was allowed to stay with him all the time, & the staff made sure that I was ok as well! Could I please mention the lovely ward clerk who was on duty until 10pm. She never stopped all the time we were there, making sure that all the patients had a drink if allowed, bringing my husband a sandwich when I mentioned that he is diabetic & needed something to eat. She went above and beyond to make sure that everything that could be done was done. All the staff were amazing, a real credit to the NHS. I had worked as a ward clerk myself for many years prior to retiring and could not fault any aspect of the care that my husband received. Thank you sincerely.

I had a spine injection done at LGI done on the beginning of May this year. It was so nice of them of doing in a timely manner so I could walk straight down the aisle on my wedding (which was going to be overseas). Thank you!

My only complaint was that the toilet on the ground floor in Brotherton Wing was out of order so my wife had to go find a public toilet as all the wards were mainly staff only, but otherwise couldn't fault them. Staff were very pleasant and helpful and we didn't have long to wait for my appointment.

The staff are clearly stretched, demand is high. I have had problems with the referral triage service who do not understand the needs of patients with long term conditions. Cleanliness in public areas could be better. We are so lucky to have a centre of excellence in our doorstep in Leeds. I prefer LGI and Wharfedale

13 hours on a trolley in A&E - no food or toilet assistance offered despite not being independent able to do. Arguing with me that I could not have relative stay with me due to COVID despite my vulnerabilities and the fact I verbalised that I felt unsafe in the AE. Loud angry people in dept with singing drunks - very scary place, nurses clearly stressed and this translated to how they treated me in unkind and abrupt manner, it took me breaking down into tears and a panic attack before staff conceded that I really was afraid and needed my family member with me. Ward not much better - wonderful night staff kind caring compassionate but not backed up by day team Left crying in pain for overs 6 hours on at least 2 occasions - nurse then told me it was my fault as I asked the wrong person for pain relief - I was bed bound and pressed the call button several times for help. Nurse then told me that I could not be in that much pain as I still had energy to argue and then said that I was aggressive because I was articulating my care needs. Likely she labelled me as such to other staff members and I dread to think what lies she documented in the notes. Awful experience of medical and nursing care really demonstrating the worst of practice. Time for the NHS to go and private healthcare to take over. The NHS is arrogant institutionalised and there is no concern over sourcing their patients; this is reflected in how patients are treated, as objects that have things done to them and patients are labelled as difficult just for asking to be involved in their care. Private health would make the care arena competitive and improve how staff treat patients consequently. France have a very effective affordable insurance based health system as do most other European countries. We can do better than the NHS, which for me is now known as the National HELL Service.

Because my surgery was during the pandemic I had to be put in a side ward with 3 other women in a male ward. I was only in about 72 hours so not too bigger problem apart from privacy for the women. Not Mr Sinahs fault

Parking is a huge problem. I have also been under the care of a Doctor for my broken neck and have been seen by him once since my operation in December 20’, it is now March 22’. I have had telephone calls on occasion, but these do not fill me with confidence as to my current/future recovery. As I have not been seen, I am concerned that if my surgery has not healed correctly, I will be consigned to a bleak if not ultimately failed career. I am assuming that the reasons for these failings are at the hospital level, not clinic/doctor.
