Review of Birthing Unit written by a patient
18th February 2016

Having had a very bad experience at another Nottinghamshire hospital when having my first baby which included an emergency ceasarean, I chose to have my second at King's mill hospital. I was very nervous about going through it all again, but thanks to a very understanding medical team I was able to on plan a VBAC but with a available ceasarean section as intervention rather than induction should things not go the way the should. At 10 days overdue, the day before my planned section my waters broke & I went into hospital. The midwives were very kind & helpful, after assessing me I was taken to the ward for early labour where my husband was able to stay with me, which I found very reassuring. By the following morning labour had slowed significantly and I was advised I could either have section as planned or wait the full 12 hours and be induced, there was no guarantee of a section at that point so I chose to have the caesarean as planned. The medical team were great as was the care from the midwife who allowed me to have the skin to skin shortly after birth i'd wanted, something I missed out on first time. On the ward I was given a side room and the care I received was for the most part great. Due to having a history of infection post caesarean I was able to stay an extra day to ensure I was well and ready to go home. A few points could be improved on; unlike the hospital i'd been to previously there was no security tagging of the babies which is worrying when you are on your own with other couples and their visitors wandering about. Although I was a second time mum a refresher on baby bathing would have been great. Some more care assistants to provide the help needed for post section mums would be great for when midwives are stretched. Also improvement of the attitude towards women who choose cesarean section would be good, not from everyone but from some midwives I got the impression they disapproved of caeserean which isn't helpful. The best things about the service; the care is great, the midwives & medical team really appeared to listen to me and informed while allowing me to make the decisions on my care based on all the information. The rooms are very comfortable and well equipped, and clean! It makes such a difference when you're compromised to be in a comfortable environment, and it makes those early days so much better. I'd like to make a special mention of a midwife called Kelly Stammers; I was having a terrible night where my baby would not sleep unless breastfeeding/being help, at my wits end Ms Stammers offered to help sooth my baby, allowing me to get the best most welcome 2 hour sleep i've ever had! Her kindness and care is something I will always remember.

Review of Maternity Ward (postnatal) written by a patient
17th February 2016

Was on the maternity ward before the birth of my daughter to be induced, and after for a day and a half as my daughter was born with a low apgar score and needed monitoring due to being a medium risk baby. I absolutely loved my time on the maternity ward. Every member of staff gave excellent care, was very supportive and very thorough. I can't wait to have my second child and go back again!

Kind and thoroughly professional staff. Seen very quickly, but there were only four people in the waiting room, which makes a huge difference to all concerned.

Review of Birthing Unit written by a patient
16th February 2016

The midwives and Drs on the birthing unit all provided fantastic care and support. There were a few issues with my birth and the health of my baby - all precautions were covered and my baby was delivered safely. Through the pain I actually enjoyed giving birth and I know this was down to the care given! Can't wait to have my next baby there.

Review of A&E (Emergency Department) written by a family member
16th February 2016

After contacting NHS Direct due to my 4 year old daughter being short of breath and having oxygen levels of 89%, we were instructed to take our daughter directly to A&E. Upon arrival we informed the lady on the main A&E desk of our daughters problem and she was concerned and very sympathetic and sent us straight through to the Childrens A&E department. Upon entering the Childrens A&E department my partner explained everything to the lady behind the desk who, from the moment we walked in, showed absolutely no concern or urgency for our daughter (I believe she was a triage nurse, but unfortunately i didn't get her name). We took a seat in the waiting room and was then left for an hour and twenty minutes before my daughter was even seen by a triage nurse (it may well have been longer had i not complained)! Surely the hospital should be assessing patients as soon as possible so that they can start to receive treatment in line with the urgency of their complaint? Once my daughter had been seen by the triage nurse (who was a different nurse, and was very helpful) she was taken straight into an adjacent treatment room and given three back-to-back nebulisers, calpol (for her now high temperature) and steroids - just to give an indication of how unwell she was. To me, the level of initial care and the attitude of the nurse who booked us in was a disgrace at any level, but especially when dealing with a 4 year old girl who is short of breath.

Very impressed by the care given at the antenatal suite. I was consultant led and was provided with regular scans, appointments and was extremely happy with the thorough care given at every visit.

I am speaking on behalf of my mother who is 86 years old. She was taken into hospital over a week ago and was treated for nausea and lack of eating. She was admitted onto Ward 32 and following investigations and scans it was revealed that she had Pancreatic Cancer. The way in which the doctors together with the nurses and ancillary staff dealt in a sympathetic and understanding manner was with out doubt exceptional. We have nothing but praise for the whole of the team and hospital for my mothers stay and end of life care that has been put in place to enable her to spend some time at home. As a family we would not hesitate to recommend the hospital to anyone. Five stars all the way.

Review of A&E (Emergency Department) written by a family member
28th January 2016

I attended A & E with my mother after taking advice from the 111 service - I opted not to use the ambulance offered but transported her myself. Although the care she received from the doctors and nurses was exemplary, I found the attitude of the receptionist rude. Upon entering the building I sat my mother down and then queued at the reception area. Several people waiting including myself were told to stand behind a given line and wait our turn (no manners or courteous smile). After the person in front of me had been attended to I stepped forward to be seen. Instead of being dealt with, a member of staff stepped in front of me, was dealt with and then the receptionist answered the phone, looked at me and pointed for me to step behind the line again. I felt her attitude rude with no apology for ignoring me. I was not the only disgruntled member of the public. Whilst eventually taking my mothers details she made little eye contact, did not once smile and looked thoroughly fed up and her appearance was messy and her hair greasy. In view of the recent bad press and grading of the hospital I felt that I had to say that I am not surprised if this is the way your front line staff are trained to deal with the public. Interpersonal skills need attention!
