Review of Delivery Suite written by a patient
30th May 2018

-student midwife on ward did not time my contractions as I would have expected. I felt unable to do so at this stage of labour as they were so regular. Therefore, the urgency of my immiment delivery was missed and I was told that a 30minute wait to go to delivery was suitable. - There was no midwife on delivery for me to transfer from the ward to delivery suite and I had a long wait to be transferred down. This meant that I was unable to receive my preferred method of pain relief. Also, the wait to go to delivery instilled panic and fear (as I was in stage three of labour and ready to birth my baby). This panic created a negative birth experience for my first baby. Staff were only just able to get me to delivery suite 5 mins before I birthed my baby. As a result, the midwife who handed over did not have any of my details; not even my name. - my baby was taken to neo natal care whilst I received stitches. I was not instructed on how to use gas and air to prevent pain and as a result the stitching process was traumatic. Also, the midwife did not effectively communicate what she was doing or indicate length of time the stitching would take. - There was no clear information about my baby during this process and this was distressing as he was not with me. Positives: All staff were very friendly. Midwife visited to debrief after the birth and advised I discuss birth notes to piece together the event.

Review of Delivery Suite written by a patient
23rd January 2018

My care started in the birth unit but due to complications I was transferred to the central delivery suit for monitoring and this is where I gave birth. I want to pay special thanks to my student midwife Fleur who was incredible for a 3rd year student. She treated me with dignity and respect and had an incredible way of putting us (my husband and I) at ease. As a physiotherapist who works at the trust I regularly mentor students. If any of my students were as professional, proficient and adept as Fleur I would be very impressed, and want to have the patient feedback. Please could you ensure this message reaches her /her mentor. I also want to thank the staff on delivery suit for being so attentive and for the wonderful aftercare as well as care during the birth of our daughter. Please send our thanks to them also. Despite needing to spend the night, again the care and attention the midwives and staff on the post natal ward gave me was brilliant and enabled a speedy discharge home the next day so we could introduce our new arrival to our toddler at home. Thank you again. Jennifer and Thomas King

A very caring environment. All the staff were friendly and considerate, and there was always someone readily available. Everything my dying partner would have wished for.

Review of Birth Unit written by a patient
11th November 2017

I was admitted in the early hours of Wednesday 8th November 2017. I chose to be at gloucester royal as my no 1 birthing place as both of my two children before hand were born here. Both of which also Needed medical help As soon as they were born. Especially William who was placed in scubu shortly after delivery due to breathing complications. The team at the birthing unit straight away were amazing helpful Coulldnt do enough to help - there were so many amazing Midwife’s and even catering staff on the wards that were polite friendly and easy going and so incredibly helpful. As my son was jaundice we stayed for an additional night after delivery on the 8th at 4.47am on the birthing unit and then once a room was available we moved to room 10 in maternity ward. All spaces were clean and made me feel comfortable. Almost felt I was on a mini break. I came across so many Midwife’s during my time in hospital this week and I have nothing but amazing praise and admiration for the work they do, the hours they work the love and passion they show and generally how amazing they all were. On my last day I was even priveledged to See the midwife who delivered my daughter 8 years ago too. It seemed fitting to end my time with the same person who saw me through my first delivery. I wasn’t let down then and 8 years on gloucester royal still has nothing but admiration in praise in mine and my families eyes. Thank you for bringing my three children safely into the world and ensuring they were healthy enough to be sent home at the right time. You are all stars. My husband and I have been raising money for gloucester royal scoo be doo charity though triathlons and marathons over past few years since William was born. We have raised just over 1,000 through our just giving page - we just felt we needed to give something back as a way of a massive thank you. Thank you again to all your superhero’s

Lovely welcoming staff. Made situation better than it was. Supportive and informative. Knew what they were doing and had better outcome due to skilled workers. Aftercare good. Sometimes opposite info given (just differences in practice) all round very good care. Would definitely recommend and will be using services again.

Review of Birth Unit written by a patient
27th June 2017

The midwives in the birth unit when my son was born were incredible. They took into account all my wishes and ensured I understood all my options. The student midwife was excellent and the other midwives were kind and compassionate. After my son was born the midwife on call sat with me to teach me how to breastfeed-this was invaluable. The one to one assistance for 15 mins gave me confidence and knowledge to keep breastfeeding. I can't praise the staff enough. They even ensured my husband was comfortable and supported him.

We were allowed to have the low intervention birth we wanted and I was completely assured that the clinical expertise was there as and when required. Completely put at ease by all staff and the excellent facilities. I feel so blessed that this service is available in Gloucestershire.
