3 weeks ago I fractured my humerus and couldn’t get in for a surgical appointment in my local hospital, we travelled 90 minutes to Furness General. I was incredibly nervous to be so far from home (my dad works in the RLI and I know many staff members). I felt out of my comfort zone, alone and scared. I was greeted instantly by the staff and shown to my bed, the nurse came over to introduce herself and set me up within a couple of minutes. She was lovely, very quickly helped me relax and lent an ear to listen to my troubles, within 5 minutes my tears turned to laughter as we compared injuries of the past. All the staff at Furness General were very attentive towards all the patients, they checked up on us so regularly making sure we were comfy, hydrated and had everything we needed. I was so nervous about attending this hospital rather than my local hospital but I’m so glad I was there. Our ward was relatively quiet, it was relaxing and calm and the nurses let us enjoy the radio to pass the hours. Every staff member I met was a real credit to the NHS, they do a fantastic job anyway but to have such positive attitudes and energy during this pandemic is truly amazing.
