As an international student who has already paid a big sum of money as health surcharge while applying for a visa, I have been refused treatment just because the registration takes 2 days. There is no ethic in this hospital. I've been ill since 5 days, but just because of a registration which takes 2 days. Am really disappointed and I tend to take this matter in front of a higher authority in due time because its inacceptable that a patient is refused treatment just because the registration has not yet been approved and it takes 2 days. This is the first time ever that I am seeing a hospital refusing treatment and going against the basic ethical policy of doctors that is to never refuse treatment to a patient.

I have been an inpatient for surgery 4 times over the last 10 years. Sadly I wouldn't recommend anyone to use some, but not all the wards I was placed in. One ward had a carpet in the dining area with food trodden in, dirty plates and cutlery, which I and others reported, but were told 'the machine is old and their isn't any money for a new one'. Also a bathroom had a bath which took about 2 hours to empty, two years latter was still the same. In the other bathroom the floor tiles were missing and had been for a long time. Urine was running accross the floor to where I stood to shower, whilst standing on the same floor. After back surgery one of my 2 pillows was lost and was told 'there aren't any more'. When standing in the main hospital corridor a cleaner was removing surgical waste from the theaters in plastic sacks placed on a trolly. He wheeled it up the long corridor with blood leaking from the bags onto the floor which is used by all ward staff, surgical staff and vistors in that part of the hospital. I was on intavenous antibiotics for an aquired infection at the hospital, this was intended to be administered over a number of minutes. One member of the night staff followed this instruction and explained to me the need for following this correctly, the next night another nurse just put the whole lot in in one go, I told them how painfull it was and if I remember correctly reminded her of the need to administer slowly. Again when being treated for the secondary probelm of infection, I had use of a fan as I had a very high temperature. A day later it was taken away for another patient, I explained my need for it, but the relpy was we only have one and the other patient needs it too. As I am on immunosuppressive therapy, and an infection of this type was serious and in my opinion I also needed a fan! The surgical/medical team for the most part are excellent if overworked, the nursing staff show (only in some wards) a very relaxed attitude to the overall quality of the wards. Very sad day for the NHS...

After I fractured my humerus on 25th March 2013, I was treated in the A and E department. I was then treated by the X-ray staff then had outstanding treatment from the staff in the 'fracture plastering' department. During my on-going treatment I was incredibly fortunate to be seen by several members of Mr Webb's team, including Mr William Thomas. During the course of my treatment I was given excellent advice, which I followed to the letter. As a consequence I made a good recovery and was discharged 18th June 2013. I am indebted to all staff working within, and in support of, the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department.

The cleanliness, food and age of the ward was terrible. I felt that the accessibilty of the toilets, ward and aids for disabled patients was completely overlooked. Wheelchairs were rarely available for trips off of the ward and the ambience of the ward and its surroundings left A LOT to be desired and also did not help one as a patient get better! The food was not nutritional and presented very badly, the worst i have had in hospital! Nursing staff were rude and un helpful, and made several mistakes on drug rounds, that were only picked up by me as a patient! (god knows what medication people who either don't pay attention or are too poorly/confused actually take or what medication is checked out of sight of the patients and given via IV or IM?) and these mistakes were made despite nurses being completely quiet when doing their drug rounds! I was a inpatient in Dec 2012 and i was even given a sachet of medication that went out of date in 2009!!!!!! This was only picked up as i take such respnsability for my own care! I also saw and heard them give abusive care to confused and elderly patients, such as leaving them on the bed pan for extreamly long periods of time or talking to them badly! The nursing staffs own hygine needs to be reviewed as i saw them rarely washing their hands in between pateints, never cleaning the blood pressure cuff, and using the bed to put medication on such as suppositories! On the plus side, my medical care was fantastic and i felt the doctors did everything possible to give me good and speedy care.

The hospital itself is looking a bit tired these days, but the staff and equipment seem to be up to scratch. Parking can be an issue, but not a lot you can do about that.

Kept waiting despite an early appointment with no feed back to explain why (though my appointment with the consultant went way better than I had dared hope!), the waiting area was cramped, uncomfortable and to be frank, really drab, which is inexcusable these days.
