I am a advanced practice nurse who lives and practices in the United States. I came to England this week to visit my elderly great aunt. Unfortunately my aunt fell on Friday but seemed to be alright the day of. However she woke up the next day with a very weak arm. We took her in onto the Fleetwood Urgent Treatment Center on Saturday morning and although there were several people ahead of us we were seen relatively quickly (less than 30 minutes). Louise NP attended to us and we were very pleased with her service. She did a thorough examination and was able to elicit responses from my aunt that I had not been able to. She knew the right questions to ask and understood the intricacies of phrasing things just so in order for my aunt to consider her advice. Unfortunately X-rays were not available over the weekend so Louise gave us the option of going to Blackpool Hospital now for the X-Ray or making an appointment for an X-ray at the clinic first thing on Monday morning. Considering my aunt already told me that she would absolutely not be going to Blackpool Hospital we opted for the appointment on Monday morning which again was the sensible and appropriate thing to do given the circumstances. What impressed me the most was the wholistic approach that Louise demonstrated. She understood that although my aunt injured her arm the bigger issue was the frequency of which my aunt was falling and the reality that my aunt lacked supportive services at home. My aunt lives independently and she does not have relatives nearby. She spoke convincingly to my aunt about her increasing need for social services to help her remain in her home independently and made a note for her primary care physician to follow up with a complete workup and an in-home assessment. We appreciate the care that Louise gave to my aunt. She is an exceptional medical provider and we hope that she is acknowledged for her outstanding service.
