Mr [name removed] and team are amazing, however St Erme ward and some staff were not so helpful. People waiting for a long time for bedpans after surgery and through the night. Medication kept being delayed when the nurse handing out pills was needed elsewhere, at one point the meds trolley was left open & unsupervised. I was left sitting on a bedpan after surgery with no bed alarm buzzer, so I pulled myself up and off using the side bars, which could have caused injury, I wasn't the only one. The next day I was helped into an armchair so that I could have a wash, it wasn't until I turned around I realised there weren't any curtains at the windows, I was being watched by workmen outside, a health care tried to put blinds down but they didn't work. Another lady said she was on a commode being watched by workmen aswell. After being given the ok to go home I waited for someone to remove the canulas in both hands, a young health care went to find a nurse. Then a very abrupt porter came to me and said that I had 5 minutes to get dressed so he could take me to the discharge lounge. I still had the canulas in, hadn't had a wash or dressed, the healthcare came back to help me. The porter pulled the curtains back while I was still getting dressed. He rushed me to lounge and then for 10 minutes sat talking to staff. Very rude and abrupt, he shouldn't be doing that kind of job, I don't know what the rush was all about as I waited for nearly 2 hours to be picked up. St Erme ward had staff that stood in the bay I was in and spoke in a foreign language, fair enough but patients were left wondering what or who they were talking about. I found this quite rude. One poor lady with dementia was talking to them 2hile they were giving her a strip wash and they never spoke to her once, all she needed was a kind voice and reassurance. I've worked for the NHS for 23years and would never have treated my patients the way I was treated. I would be operated on by Mr [name removed] at anytime but not stay on St Erme ward again. I

After my Neurological surgery I was placed onto Erme ward the night staff were lovely but very understaffed, another ward had taken a member of their staff. This meant bedpans were in short supply and we had to get ourselves off which was a strain after spinal surgery. Morning staff also left us on bed pans and wash ourselves, it wasn't until we turned around to the main windows we discovered that there weren't any blinds pulled down. We were in full view of workmen directly outside the windows. Most of the staff never spoke to us, they washed and dressed a distressed & confused elderly lady who spoke to them but never spoke a word to her. 3 of the staff would group together and spoke in their own language which was very rude. A porter came to take me to a waiting area but I wasn't washed or dressed, he pulled curtains around me & said "I'll give you 5 minutes to dress" I still had canulas in both hands & couldn't raise my hands above my waist, causing me to overstretch which my Consultant told me not to do. This man was very abrupt and rude, he shouldn't be portering & find some empathy. I worked for the NHS on a Stroke ward for 15 years and would never ever have treated my patients the way we were treated. Mr [name removed] & his team were wonderful but the ward staff not all of them left a lot to be desired. I feel your Porters need to learn patience and empathy, undergoing major surgery is severely painful & cannot be rushed to end up spending hours in a discharge lounge, we are human beings not robots. Caring staff need to engage with patients and not speak in a foreign tongue within earshot of them.

I can't speak highly enough of the Primrose Breast Unit at Derriford. Having been referred following a mammogram, I was anxious when I arrived for my follow up appointment. The staff were lovely, patient, understanding and took great care to explain everything before the further tests were done. The procedures were completed quickly and I was made to feel that I really mattered. Thank you so much for taking care of me so well.

I came to hospital on thursday via ambulance because i was 23 weeks pregnant. I have a low placenta unlike my 3 previous pregnancies with my older children. On thursday morning i started to bleed heavy at home. I called an ambulance and got taken to the maternity ward. I have since been moved to Argyll ward. I have post Traumatic stress disorder and i was unable to contact my partner as he doesnt live with me anymore and had recently lost his phone. His mother managed to contact him and tell him and he travelled to hospital as soon as he could which was by the thursday evening. He is a veteran who has combat stress ptsd and dyslexia. Some of the staff were very supportive of us both during some of my stay he's visited as much as he can ( its now tuesday and im waiting for a scan to check on my placenta and baby growth. The staff were aware of safeguarding in place. However by partner was not drunk and was just worried , stressed, tired and concerned about me and our baby. He didnt understand why i was crying so i explained it was because i kept having tightening pains. We both tried to nap and rest up a bit but both found it stressful. I felt alot more pain free being able to hold his hand and also safe loved and calm when hugged and taking naps on my partners chest. It was lovely to be able to have some moments where we both felt like we could be there for eachother and our growing baby daughter who we worried about coming early. Sometimes i can overhear staff chatting about me and my partner and other patients in a more judgmental laughing about way which isnt good at all. Over the time i have heard on both wards comments like '"oh they thought it would be better if they had a baby " " aww shes scared about loosing the baby " When hes not been here at all at night ive heard them say " shes not had panic or anxiety at all " An just other random comments I can hear from the room im in and if i use the toliet or shower. I had a shower and i heard a comment " oh shes washed her belly i bet her pains start again " ect. I was actually trying to calm my unborn baby with the warm water and also my belly is very sore. I have also had random anxiety and panic attacks day and or night for the last 20 years or so.. Not sure why sime comments were made. I also asked a member of staff in the night for some advice about a low placenta and asked to learn about the tightings i had been having and why id bled an that i felt period pain an that tightenings were less painful but still uncomfy. Afterwards she went back to the deak and made commments to other staff which wasnt nice for me to hear as i explained to her i was just worried and just wanted more pregnancy care advice on what id been experiencing an for hopefully the rest of my pregnancy. I was made to feel bad for getting up at night just to have a wee and the fact i coudlnt settle to sleep well. I have been resting as much as i can i bed. Ive also been having nicotine alternatives instead of smoking which is stressful for me but at least im trying..

Being diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time at the height of a pandemic is not great, but Derriford Hospital has been amazing. My treatment has been seamless from Day 1, and couldn't have been completed any faster despite the huge pressures the hospital has been under. Throughout the last 6 months staff at every level - consultants through to receptionists - have been professional, friendly, supportive, helpful, reassuring and 'on it' from Day 1 as i have undertaken chemotherapy and surgery. The next stages of treatment - radiotherapy etc - are all organised, dates are in the diary, and I am fully up to speed with what else will be required for the next 3-5 years. I feel very fortunate to have Derriford as my local hospital.

On initial admission staff were faultless, interactive, reactive and acted with professional conduct. I was very impressed as I am a retired nurse. However after a change of staff the hca allocated to "care" for me was arrogant, full of over self importance (she appeared to be showing a new recruit the ropes). There was absolutely no.interaction. bedside manner rude, clinical procedure skills rushed and poor at best. I.was thankful to.be moved to a different ward! From then on care was good, staff professional and caring. Shame about the hca as otherwise impressive service.
