My GP sent an urgent referral to gastroenterology. Triage of the referral took place within two weeks. I had a flexible sigmoidoscopy eight working days later. My assessment appointment was running late though this was explained to me. The assessment nurse, Aine, was excellent, she apologised for my wait. She took down all the medical details she needed to and explained the procedure in detail, asking me if there were any questions. I was treated with the upmost respect and dignity, I felt valued and given plenty of time despite it getting late into the evening. On the day of the procedure, Rosie went over the assessment papers and took my obs. Again I was asked if I had any questions. Once in the theatre everyone introduced themselves and the procedure was explained once more. Questions were invited and responded to appropriately. My treatment was very much person-centred where respect and dignity was present throughout the procedure. I have to say it was good to see that these values were extended to each and by each member of the team which was made up of nurse Julie, nurse Katie, Dr Abbasi and Dr Desai. Thank you to all the staff of the County Hospital Endoscopy Unit. The procedure was undertaken by Dr Abdullah Abbasi and supervised by Dr Rajeev Desai. Any questions I had were answered clearly and fully by Dr Desai. I have to say that I really felt privileged to witness the relationship between the two medics. Clearly a relationship of mutuality had developed between them and for me in addition to demonstrating excellent clinical competence Dr Desai is an excellent role model for attentive listening and communication, as well as an excellent role model as a clinical educator and mentor.
