My friend - a young woman - was referred to Addenbrookes yesterday by her GP - and received the most appalling treatment. She has been in severe abdominal pain for weeks, and had peritonitis diagnosed but inadequately treated at another hospital. She was also complaining of difficulty breathing, pain on taking a breath, and had a fast heart rate of 120 and low blood pressure. She has been in bed all the time for the past 2 weeks so the possibility of a deep vein thrombosis leading to a pulmonary embolism had been suggested already by someone else - but was NOT excluded or mentioned by Addenbrookes! You cannot exclude a PE solely with an ECG and a chest Xray. After 6 hours waiting in an upright chair in dreadful pain she finally went for an emergency CT scan - but the technician refused to do it as she had no iv port! And the tech refused to wait while a nurse inserted one! SO this patient who may well have had a pelvic abscess and was in absolute agony was sent back to her GP yesterday evening still complaining of chest pain as well. This is disgraceful and scandalous. Addenbrookes claims to be a "centre of excellence" and "world renowned." Also "a regional and national centre." But the way they treated this patient last night was scandalous. Any tin shack nursing outpost would be ashamed of this level of "care." A better standard would be provided by a three year old with a"play doctor" set. Addenbrookes ought to remove all the above boasting immediately until they have at least reached the standard of a mediocre cottage hospital. All staff involved and responsible management ought to be thoroughly ashamed and reconsider their commitment to patient care and their "professional" values - if they actually have any. Absolutely dire lack of care and attention.
