I am very thankfull and greatful to the University Medical Centre for thier staff' express help and care I recieved when I fainted in the reception.
Anyone who wants to make an appointment has to phone the surgery either at 8:45 am or 1:45 pm Monday - Friday. Then of cause when you phone the line is always busy. Sometimes I spend nearly half a hour on the phone trying to make an appointment but with no success. If you phone exactly at 8:45 am (or 1:45 pm) you will find a voice message saying they are closed and you are suggested to make a call at 8:45 am (or 1:45 pm); this voice message won't disappear till about 8:50 am (1:50 pm). I guess the reason is that - I found out that the clock on the reception wall is actually about 4-5 minutes late.
I tried to make an appointment with a specific GP yesterday morning and was lucky to get hold of the reception. But I was told to phone again at 1:45 pm today if I wanted to see that GP. I then started to phone the reception since 1:49 pm today. The line was automatically cut off for my calls made in the first 4-5 minutes without being getting through. Then the line became busy all the time. I then gave up the calls at 2:10 pm but cycled to the reception within a few minutes for making an appointment in person. The lady at the reception was polite, she told me an appointment with the specific GP would be the next week. I asked what about an appointment sooner with any GP, the answer was to call for an appointment either at 8:45 am or 1:45 pm.
Just thought the booking system is crazy!
This practice mainly caters to the student population, but local residents are welcome too. Patients are given many options when it comes to making appointments - by phone, online, or in person. There are also some walk-in appointments available to see the nurse. The website is comprehensive and functions well.
Receptionists are patient and friendly and the waiting area is sufficient - nothing special but there is a loo and a TV screen that plays a loop of health-related news and ad campaigns.
Patients are called over an intercom which is a little fuzzy and takes you by surprise the first few times, and the crackliness of the speaker can make you paranoid that each name called might have been yours.
I have seen 3 different doctors and a nurse at the practice. The nurse was very kind and friendly, and one of the doctors, Dr Merali, is fantastic. I didn't really get on with the 2 other doctos I have seen there, but they were both perfectly competent and knowledgeable as practitioners.
The only problem I've had at this practice was when I ordered a repeat prescription script and it took a while to come back - after 4 days and 2 phonecalls I eventually went in and sat whilst it was hurriedly signed for me. But I can only assume that was a one-off, as generally this practice is very well-run. I would highly recommend it, especially to students.
