Doctors are great … if you can get to see them. First you have to go through a system designed in the 1950s. Today I failed to get an appointment after spending 15 minutes on a call during which the receptionist went through each doctor’s diary individually to see if there are any gaps. Their IT does not have a “search for next free slot” function! If they are wasting 10-15 minutes doing this for each patient (before telling them to call back in a week) it is no surprise that the call queues are long.

This surgery may do great medicine, and offer a wide range of services; but if they can’t professionalise their booking process, with better IT, less fragmented staff availability, and a friendlier reception culture, this will remain a truly horrible experience.

It is impossible to get an appointment at Summertown Health Centre, it is hard enough just to get through on the phone! If you do manage to see a Dr, never expect to be able to see the same one twice - virtually impossible! You can wait for 2 weeks for an appointment with a particular Doctor. There are lots and lots of Doctors based here for the enormous amount of patients here also. You can normally expect to sit in the waiting room for an average of 20 minutes (often a lot longer) before you do get seen. If you have a push chair or a wheel chair there are 2 doors at angles that are very hard to get through upon arrival and if your Dr is upstairs (most of them are) you will have to leave your pushchair in the downstairs waiting room while you are waiting upstairs to be seen. I was a patient at this Centre 25 years ago and it was wonderful. Very sadly it is lacking in every area now.

My family and I have been patients of the Health Centre for 7 years now and have received consistently good care across the board. They have invested in renovating the premises and kept them in good repair, have embraced the need for remote requesting of repeat prescriptions via the internet, and the staff all do their job ably. Thank you!
