I Need to pass on my FACTUAL feedback in regards to booking an EMERGENCY appointment over the phone at Studholme. this needs to be loked at the people within this surgery and NOT removed for others to see what happened in my familys case. Several times as a last resort after exhasuting all over the counter medicines, my family and I have had cause to make an emergency appointment to see a doctor for my wife and youngest son (who is under 3), their last appointments at this surgery were several years ago when they were last GENUINELY sick, on the most recent occasion 24/01/18 trying to get through thier taxpayer funded telephone system at 0800hrs is a nightmare, eventually after getting loads of disconnections and then in queuing system, i was told that no appointments are available, when i tried to question this i get DISCONNECTED from their side. Fuming, i have no option but to goto the surgery in person, when i get there at 0812hrs 25/01/19, the surgey waiting area is completley empty, i am eventually approached by a member of reception and when i ask for the name of the person who hung up on me, i am told that there is a problem with their telephone system ?! Really!! thats convinient After a bit of to and fro i eventually get a doctor call back promise from reception for my youngest son who the day before for a emegency appointment was given a LEAFLET, my wife who is also very sick is asked to try to call back at 1300hrs with no other promises made, i would like Studholme to know, for very infrequent patients like my family who only ever approach you in extreme cases, giving a leaflet is NOT going to make me family better, my youngest has not selpt or eaten for almost 4 days, vomiting up all his insides at 3am or other random times cant be fixed by one of your leaflets, we have tried all the regular over the counter meds and they DO NOT WORK, why should my son or any of our family have to go through such pain and just be brandished with a leaflet ! NB.This is not the way to treat human beings let alone taxpayers like myself who on those rare occasions have to use the health system, its our taxes that keep you going! You dont want patients being rude or abusive to you, so why would you be like that to your patients. Have a HEART !

Response from Studholme Medical Centre

Dear Carer We are sorry to hear about your concerns on Friday 25th Jan. Some of the issues you mention are not within our control, and other statements we believe do not fairly reflect the circumstances. The Practice has invested significantly into a new onsite telephone exchange which has been very well received by our patients. This includes features like call waiting so patients know where they are within the telephone queue. We receive hundreds of phone calls each week and a small percentage of these do disconnect which is not due to our staff. We have asked our phone supplier to investigate this however we are informed that this is not unusual for a very small number of calls to disconnect especially if calls are received from mobile phones. This is often due to the signal strength of the patients mobile network and not related to our phone system. Both your son and wife’s names were added to our same day triage service and within 2 hours of the phone call with the doctor they were asked to attend the Practice. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics; hence a patient information leaflet is given to provide further information to help patients. We note they haven’t re-attended the surgery or elsewhere (we would be sent notification of such attendance) hence we believe that the correct diagnoses was given. Although medicine has progressed, unfortunately there are some conditions for which there is only symptom relief for example with viral management. Often time is required and there is no instant cure for such conditions. The frequency with which people attend the surgery doesn't affect access or the care that is received. Even if you only visit the surgery infrequently that within itself does not mean you would have a higher priority when you do visit the surgery versus any other patient. We hope you family is now feeling better, Thank you SMC.

I had bad experiences from the GPs at Studholme Medical Centre not listen to want I was saying about different pain killer medications they were giving me and then saying there was nothing else they could give me. I expressed that certain medications they they were giving had an adverse effect on me, or didn't work. But when expressing to them on at least 3 occasions that a low dosage of Tramadol 50mg, that I had from them once worked with the pain relief. They then assessed me have have demanding behaviour for pointing out that the medication worked with less side effects. But they seemed happy for me to take 60-90mg of Codeine which is 2-3 stronger morphine based than the Tramadol. This gave me severe stomach cramp, Nausea and bleeding. I also found it very insensitive and troubling that they said to me "you have to stop coming back like this". I had to return to the practice after calling the reception and telling them of the problem I was having on the medication that they had recently given me a week ago. It was reception that said I would need to see the GP. This feels like real neglect on behalf of the practice. I fear for other patients treated in this way. I wrote a letter to them complaining about this, expecting an apology from them. Did I, No, only to receive a letter saying I had demanding behaviour. This I found even more worrying. They left me in limbo without any medication. I feel I can't return to the practice if I have further health problems now due to the way I was treated. I then followed up with a second letter about their behaviour and my condition. Thinking, maybe wishfully they would understood want they had done and apologised. Well that never happened. All I wanted is a solution to my pain and having to see a different GP every time I come to the practice and explain my condition is not helping. You have so little time with a GP now that they can't asses you or they just don't listen. Gone are the days of when you could see a regular doctor that knew you and was sympathetic. This is not a good GP Practice to be at. It use to be but sadly not anymore. It worrying indeed.

Response from Studholme Medical Centre

Dear Patient, Thank for you feedback. Our practice has provided excellent and appropriate medical care to you and your comments are disappointing to read. Further it is incorrect to say that you have been left without medication. Tramadol is a painkiller to be used for acute pain and not for routine and regular usage. As a Practice we cannot prescribe medication simply because a patient demands it. We have tried to explain this situation to you and our medical team have spent much time attending to your medical needs under demanding circumstances. Appropriate referrals have been made to the pain management clinic and we have acted in a caring and helpful manner and in line with professional medical advice. We are willing to discuss this matter further with you but that can only be done in a reasonable and rationale way. Maintaining a good patient relationship is important in providing a patient with good medical care.

I love Studholme. I am often at the doctors as I have an ongoing condition that needs to be monitored and every single time I have whoever is on front desk is very polite. I have never witnessed them being rude to anyone. Sometimes the doctors are running late but still I never feel rushed. I have never had a problem with any of the current gp's and find them all great. People who say that reception are rude is mainly because they can't get an appointment for a few weeks, so therefore because of that, the receptionists are then deemed to be rude. It's not their fault and they can't just magic one out of the air if none are available. If it's urgent they do try to fit you in that day with the duty doctor and they do have to ask you what the problem is. This is because the duty doctor has to prioritise who needs treatment first. So if a patient calls about a potential urine infection and another phones about their 89 year old dad who has become confused and keeps being sick, then the gp will call that patient first. The other reason why the receptionist has to ask what's wrong is because if the condition is a sore throat or an infected wound etc then the prescribing nurses would be able to treat those kinds of conditions and therefore you could be booked in with one of them. They also have 2 great pharmacists there who can advise on any medication queries. I think they all do a surperb job at Studholme. Well done guys. One more thing, if you hate waiting in the queue to be booked in, then please use the self checking in facility. I have witnessed lots of patients moaning whilst in the queue saying that they will be late for their appointment if they don't get booked in quickly - the checking in facility is there to help you and save time in queuing so please use it. Oh yes and another thing. It clearly states on the repeat prescription box that prescriptions is a 3 day turn around, please then don't come back the next day to see if it's been processed - it says 3 days for a reason.
