Making an appointment is increasingly difficult for older patients. However, technology gives most of us different ways to book and you can usually see a doctor on the day if your situation warrants it. However, there should be a telephone number for older people and a member of staff should available to speak to all patients throughout the day. There are a couple of excellent support staff at Seven Dials Medical Centre. However, Reception does need a higher level of professionalism. There is a lot of inappropriate gossiping in front of patients, which is troubling as staff generally ignore patients and can be inexplicably unfriendly. There needs to be a concerted training program for reception staff - teaching them how to be engaged and friendly so that patients (who may be anxious) feel able to communicate freely. I strongly believe that the often hostile tone of those answering the telephone or dealing with patients means the latter, especially older ones, do not feel they can 'trouble' staff let alone complain if there is a problem. This all needs an outside perspective and solution as it has been the status quo for many years. The concept of customer service needs to be inculcated across the surgery. I think it would improve employees' experience of work and it would certainly make patients feel better, more relaxed and thus improve outcomes. I understand that there has been attempts to recruit a female doctor, I think that this would be a welcome addition for some.

Automated system is tedious but ensures you see a GP that day even though it may not be the same doctor undermining and continuity you may wish for with ongoing ailments.

All staff, including receptionists, nurses and doctors are sympathetic, professional and really helpful. I have been a patient here for nearly 20 years and wouldn't change surgeries.

Receptionist seem to be very busy looking at computer screen and don't look up to speak to you. Takes a long time to answer the phone.

The text message service confirming and reminding about appointments is good. Can’t always get a quick appointment but that’s The Health Secretary and Government’s doing.
