I do not believe that my husband was properly treated.

Late on Saturday, 29th May, my husband, who was 77yrs old had a raging toothache. Firstly the nurse sent us the Dr surgery. As he was groaning in pain, after about an hour she rethought where we should be and sent us to A&E. Admittedly to others this was 'just a toothache'. I don't know what time this was but was not considered urgent and eventually we arrived where the A&E Dr's are, to sit there for a long period of time until I asked at the desk if he could have some pain relief. The Dr said there were 6 others before my husband but did come over to have a look as Brian was continually groaning with pain. I said he was on treatment for leukaemia, chemo, but this obviously did not figure in the Dr's thinking. We were eventually sent home at about 6.45 am with antibiotics, which had been administered intravenously, and to take paracetamol. The upturn of this was that the tooth abscess was the beginning of 'sepsis' which was diagnosed on Tues 1st June. When Brian went for his chemo he was found to be seriously ill and was put into hospital (Sky A - critical care) and died of sepsis and related AML complications on 7th June. My concern is that a lot of details were overlooked; it was considered 'just a toothache' and potentially for Brian this lead to something far more serious. We were not aware that this type of infection could lead to sepsis and unfortunately by the end my husband was too compromised to put up any fight. His death was very distressing, and I know there are procedures in place for dealing with people who have the potential for sepsis, and this was was not followed and remained undiagnosed during that night-time visit. I do not look on this as a 'complaint' but a lesson to be learned!
