The ongoing cuts to GP funding in the past 7-8 years has seriously affected Mansfield Medical Centre. The workload and bureaucracy that Central Government has heaped on to GP's has resulted in rationing within the health service with patients suffering the consequences. This is a direct result of underfunding General Practice. The patient is now the helpless victim.

Without fail, the rudest, most obnoxious and patronising reception staff I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Were they competent at their job, that might be forgiven. But the sheer stupidity of what I had to deal with was of a different world. My wife was incredibly ill and asked for an appointment. They couldn't provide one for 3 weeks, which is the norm here. That itself is understandable, whilst inconvenient. She explained further and they decided to get her in that day. I left work to pick her up and got there in time. We waited half an hour beyond our appointment time, and when I asked if there was a delay, the lady nonchalantly replied they had made a mistake, and my wife should have received a phonecall, rather than come in for an appointment. It turns out 2 other patients were accidentally asked to come in. The surgery had misbooked our appointments. Mistakes happen, but their arrogance, and attitude was unforgivable. We were treated with absolute disdain, despite them making a pretty sizeable mistake, and inconveniencing all 3 of our parties. They managed to rebook us in for a face-to-face appointment in the afternoon, meaning I ended up having to take the day off work without pay. Not the first bad experience I've had there, but definitely the worst!

My issue is the difficulty in getting through to the surgery, I often have to call persistently making continuous calls to the surgery until I get through, which often takes up a lot of my time. The waiting time to see my doctor is usually 3 to 4 weeks, anyone else it’s about 2 weeks, I have often been directed by the surgery receptionists to attend the walk in centre if my illness couldn’t wait until an appointment could be offered, on some occasions I have been given a call back which is ok but not always suitable for me as I don’t consider this a very good level of patient care. There are some lovely GPS at the surgery who do seem kind and caring, can be a bit hit and miss with some of the others especially when I’ve encountered a locus. Due to suffering with mental health I would like to see an improvement in being able to get an appointment sooner and shorter waiting times. A call back once led me to come off my medication incorrectly which in turn caused me a lot of unnecessary negative symptoms. I do feel GPS are very stretched and I will fight to keep our NHS free at source and available to all.

Great surgery with attentive caring GPs who work hard in the challenging climate all practices face at present. As pointed out by a previous review if the patient feels an urgent appointment is required a guaranteed gp call back on the same day will be offered. This is not something I have previously encountered and is reassuring to know. Sad that so many negative reviews have been written however this is inevitable on such websites, the countless satisfied patients are presumably out enjoying their day rather than feeling the need to lambast the hard-working staff.

I would strongly advocate that any perspective patient wishing to register at this practice reconsiders and seeks enrolment elsewhere. Every single facet of the practice (from my experience) seems fundamentally flawed, the staff are rude, the waiting times go beyond the NHS Target of 48 hours and the care received is sub-standard. All of the staff who I have dealt with namely: two receptionist, an administrative officer as well as a GP, seemed to have shared a commonality of rudeness and an officious and condescending manner, which crossed the boundary of an acceptable level of care. It could be argued that one should look past the manner of staff and my hurt feelings as such behaviour although not acceptable can be excused as a caricature of the ‘battle axe’ receptionist or self-important clinician, however what one cannot excuse is poor patient care. The tipping point for both my wife and I was with reference to treatment given to my son, although outside the remit of this forum, I will be raising my complaint with the CQC and directly with NHS England. In summary, this practice does not serve the community who deserve much better.
