Hawthorns Surgery

We were visiting family in the area over the New Year period (from 30 December to 2 January). We contacted the surgery as my husband was going to need a wound dressing changed each day while we were in Birmingham. All the staff in the surgery were really helpful and my husband was able to come to the surgery to get his dressings changed as required. Thank you so much for all your help!

The Hawthorns is an excellent surgery, and all of the staff are great assets to a busy urban practice. I suspect that it is finding it difficult to cope, like so many other surgeries under pressure, with the sheer volume of appointments. It would therefore be unfair to criticise it about the sometimes prolonged process of obtaining an appointment. In any case, I have always been able to wait at the end of surgery if I felt it was essential to see a doctor on the day. The online booking system is a step in the right direction.

First class Practice - well run and with high quality medical staff. The only criticism I have is a sign of the times rather than the Hawthorns insofar as it can be difficult to get an appointment with your "own" GP or sometimes with any GP. The computerised appointments system helps, but often there can be no appointments for weeks, whereas the 8:30 phone call to grab one of today's appointments can become a family pastime. We have had five phones trying to get through from our house before now - and still failed. The pressure on GPs seems to be extreme and relentless and I suspect the Hawthorns is better than most in the way it deals with the volumes. Suffice it to say that if you have a problem needing immediate attention you can always be seen by a doctor - and that's probably about as good as it gets in this day and age. That said, the Hawthorns is a well run Practice that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend

It is difficult sometimes to get an appointment but a sit and wait system is in place for emergency consultations if it is urgent.
