When trying to get an on the day appointment, I call at exactly 8.30am yet I'm always caller number 42 or 52, on hold for 25 minutes only to be told no more appointments - emergencies only or book one for 2 weeks time!! (that's if the computer system hasn't crashed!). Surely the phone system has the capacity to change the recorded 'thank you for your patience' etc to 'sorry, there are no more appointments today but if it's urgent please hold'. Save time and money and stress for us.
