My family and I have been patients at the surgery for years and I can't complain about the service. It can be difficult to get through on the phone lines but I get the impression it is the same everywhere these days. Receptionists are generally helpful with the odd exception, nurses are fab and the doctors are very good, approachable and understanding especially Dr Richards, Dr Davies and Dr Winko.

Rude reception staff who think they know better than a medically trained doctor. They really make you feel like you are interrupting their day.

Suggested improvements
Overhaul the appointment booking system. Allow patients to book online and no have to endure rude reception staff who don’t want to help.

The GPs can - with one exception - be good, and at times have been very impressive. But the organisation is poor. It is very frustrating trying ton get an appointment, in a system that incentivises one to claim that things are urgent. Overall, one has the impression that patients are an interruption to the surgery's activity.

Suggested improvements
You could have a better appointments system. If I call and there are no routine appointments, but there are urgent ones, am I supposed to say that a routine matter is, in fact, urgent?

I recently went to the surgery with the pain on my left side of the body around my chest and shoulder. I was quite anxious and still am, because I'm worried it might be an angina pain, but I was surprised the GP didn't carried out any examination and treated it like a physical injury. Do I have to have a heart attack before anything gets done? I'm just very disappointed with the current state of NHS overall, and don't think as tax payer we get a good service. Also, another thing that bewilders me is when you go to the reception (This is a nationwide issue not just the Birchgrove surgery), the receptionist asks why do you want to see the GP (In front of 20 sitting visitors), without any consideration that I might have an embarrassing illness that I don't want other people to hear. I wonder if they don't teach the medical staff about confidentiality laws and respect for patient's privacy.

Used the self check in service so n/a to comment on reception staff. But just left the surgery feeling extremly frusterated!.. On the doctors call back phone call..with jaquluene graham.. my 6 year old daughters details could not be found..i was asked if she was even registered there!..i would not have even got threw to the doctors call back if she was'nt! Then she rang back..i explained her symptoms.. she asked if i had taken photoes i said no?.. she said i will ask you to take photoes..and paused for ages... i was like ...? Yea?... i thought well if you look at her while she has the symptoms..i don't need to take photoes.. Anyway.. after a half bothered suggestion of did i want to bring her up.. i said yes.. Dr.graham was extremly cold..attitudey...a couple of awquad silences were there..untill i broke them.. she gave us no diagnosis after looking at her blistered and scorched red face..and said..' i don't no what you are hoping for?' Really?... Why do most people take a child to a doctors? Is it not to find out what is wrong and how to help them get better?? I said i want to know what is wrong with her face so i no how to help her! Before hand I told her that she was diagnosed last year..here..with her skin condition as 'slap cheek' but after researching it myself it really is not! She said no..you can't get that twice.. I explained that after some research it was more like a skin condition called polyography which is from heat and sun. She said nothing and started playing on the computer and we sat in silence again... She said half bothered..do you want to see a dermotologist?.. I said do you think she needs to see one?.. She started rambling on about the sun and the skin condition with no information at all..so i just cut in and said yes ok..will see one..atleast then we can find out what she is suffering with! She mentioned the photoes again and antihystamines which she prescribed to her then.. We left there feeling extremly worse off than before we got there!.. Dr. Jaquliene graham was very unhelpful and seemed like we were an inconvenience.. When you'r child is suffering..and crying in the night because her face is burning and ears are blistered after all suncreams home creams and medications are failing..i expect that when you go to your local doctors that just a little comfort ...kindness something along those lines is what you would get!.. Not with dr.graham! I will be in future requesting dr.davies or dr.arnold who put dr.graham to shame!
