I very much regret the cessation of the afternoon open surgeries. One knew one would have to wait, but at least people were seen in turn, and 'people watching' can be interesting. I recently attended the surgery one afternoon, mistakenly thinking I had read somewhere the the new appointment system has been abandoned. I have always been the most reluctant to see a doctor unless I have to, but this time was in considerable distress with a health problem, and symptoms which I even thought might become life threatening, but the receptionist insisted I could not see a see a doctor that day, and must telephone for an appointment at 8:00 am the next morning. The next morning I phoned every 3-4 minutes, but the line was constantly engaged until approximately 8:40 am . when I eventually got through and was given an appointment for 9:30 am. I arrived and checked in at 9:20 am, and then sat and waited for 40 minutes whilst a considerable number of people who arrived at various times later were seen in front of me. By this time I was getting a little agitated so I approached the receptionist and asked if I had been forgotten - but she said I would be seen next. I had never previously met the lady doctor I saw and do not know her name, but she dealt with my problem kindly and efficiently, for which I thank her. I do not know how the new system is supposed to operate, all I can say is that in my experience at least, it certainly didn't seem to be fair or patient friendly.
