I know many reviews centre around the reception staff being rude and unhelpful and whilst I agree they're not particularly friendly or sensitive I do find they always get me an emergency appointment for my son when I need one so for that I'm grateful. My issue is more with the GP's in the surgery. My last two experiences were awful (two different doctors) who were unsympathetic and insensitive. On both occasions I was distressed for very good reason and they were both cold and dismissive. After this mornings encounter where I was told if I was going to miscarry it would just happen and asked why I felt I needed a referral for a scan even though I had clearly stated my symptoms (I've also had a previous miscarriage so unfortunately have been here before). I will now be looking to move to a different surgery. I get how busy they are and have procedures to follow but they make patients feel as though we're wasting their time. I'm disgusted that this service is considered as 'care' for the community and I think doctors in the surgery need to consider why they got into medicine in the first place.

I am so sorry to hear how you feel after your recent appointments. I be very grateful if you could feel able to contact me in confidence at the practice so that we can discuss these events in more detail. We have no wish for any patient to be left feeling the way that you have described. I would really like to understand your experiences and so that we can learn from them. Lindsay, Business Manager

I'd like to thank reception team and the gp at the surgery this Monday 6th March. I arrived at surgery after a difficult night feeling short of breath because of acute laryngitis / chest infection. The receptionist could see I needed help and took me to see the gp who was really helpful too and did a referral for me in her own time before surgery was due to start. I'm so grateful for their help, I'm feeling much better now and think we all need to treasure great local NHS staff who gp the extra mile for their patients. Thank you!

Response from Allerton Medical Centre

We offer a wide range of services via our online Patient Access including booking appointments and managing your repeat prescriptions. There is also access to certain parts of your medical files. If you call into the surgery, we can arrange to give you access. Many people really appreciate being able to use these online services in their own time to manage their healthcare more effectively. We also offer online support via our e-consult service which is available via our website without any need for prior registration. Lindsay Gollin, Business Manager

Arrived 5 minutes late as my daughter was unwell and had vomited before we left the house meaning I had to change her clothes. The receptionist was less than understanding and said we had to go and book an appointment for another day. My daughter was suffering from shortness of breath due to her asthma and had vomited due to her persistent coughing. When arriving at the counter, the first thing I did was apologise for being late, this was ignored and then after checking our arrival time, the receptionist though it important to tell me how late I was. I would normally not complain about such things, but this us the first time I have ever arrived late for a gp appointment and the sheer audacity of the staff to tell me this was unbelievable. Every appointment I have had at said practice has required me to wait at least fifteen to twenty minutes over my appointment time! Even when I have had the first or second appointment on the list. Just rubbish service, poor staff, (who were eating and drinking and drinking at the counter) and no sympathy, the appointment was for a poorly four year old who was clearly struggling.

Response from Allerton Medical Centre

Thank you for taking time to leave us your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you found us to be unsympathetic on the day that you visited with your daughter - it does sound like you had had a very stressful morning and clearly we could have demonstrated more understanding of your situation. We do endeavour to see any patient who arrives late if they arrive within their booked slot and if at all possible, the GP will see them even if they arrive past the end of their slot. However, this often results in a knock-on effect to other patients and everyone is delayed, as you describe. We really do try our best to give everyone the attention that they need. You do not say whether the doctor did see your daughter that morning so I hope that she was seen within that surgery session or booked in the afternoon. We will always make sure that a poorly child is seen as a priority. I will certainly address the issue of the staff eating at the front desk. I would be very grateful if you would ask for me or call me at the surgery whenever you feel we have let you down. We really do listen and try to learn from what our patients tell us. I find the doctors helpful but the admin team are not nice. I was told that I 'wasn't on the system' time several times when I recently tried to make an appointment. This was entirely her mistake with the computer, and she hadn't bothered to check my D.O.B so the person she had confused me with just happened to have the same name. I find them rude on the phone but when you go to the surgery they are sitting around moaning or drinking tea. I wish they had less admin people and more doctors. I also find the level of information they ask for before they decide whether you are an emergency or not inappropriate. They aren't medically trained and lack sensitivity. I have seen three different doctors there so far and they were all helpful and friendly. But unfortunately the centre isn't as efficient as where I was going before I moved.

Response from Allerton Medical Centre

I am really sorry to hear that you have not felt comfortable with our admin team and that we got it wrong when you tried to make an appointment with us. This is not the impression that we want to leave you with and I will use your comments for our next team training day for us to consider as a team. I would be grateful if you would feel happy to come and talk with me more about your experience. We try to make sure we make appointments for patients with the right clinician by asking for relevant information but it sounds like we need to consider how to do that more that more sensitively. I would really like to hear from you how we can improve. If you would be happy for us to talk, please contact me at the surgery. Many thanks, Lindsay (Business Manager)
