Some 40 odd years ago I developed a kidney stone which, after a visit to Harley Street, was successfully dealt with. To prevent further problems Allopurinol was prescribed but, unfortunately, the daily dose of 300mg proved far too high and indeed went on for far too long. It has been suggested this has been the cause for my now being on dialysis, having severely damaged kidneys. However one cannot be too critical, for presumably, at that time it was considered the correct dosage. On the brighter side over the years I have had bouts of gout but on the whole this has been kept at bay doubtless by this medicine. I am not aware of any side effects but it is for the above reason I feel I can only give a two star rating.

I have been taking Allopurinol for over ten years and the almost total disappearance of pain has been a very positive experience. It is also the case that, for me, there have been no side effects.

I suffered from gout for many years and was usually prescribed indomethacin. Which did work ok but had quite serious consequences if taken for a sustained period. I was eventually prescribed, about ten years ago, allopurinol (300mg) one tablet per day and I have never had gout since. It has no noticeable side effects in my case and i cannot find any fault with it.

After months of regular gout attacks treated with colchicine my GP put me on allopurinol whilst continuing with the colchicine for a short period. Occasional stomach cramps were soon removed once I came off the colchicine but continued with the allopurinol and, thankfully, I've been gout free for over a year.

Both parents and two brothers suffer from gout. Alcohol and fish meals, particularly salmon and prawns definitely kick it off

Profile

Allopurinol reduces the production of uric acid in your body. Uric acid buildup can lead to gout or kidney stones. Allopurinol is used to treat gout or kidney stones, and to decrease levels of uric acid in people who are receiving cancer treatment.
