If you start this medication you don't need to stop unless adviced by the doctor. When you stop for few days and resume again the swelling will start and can last for two weeks

A bone in my left foot became very painful and the surrounding area was swollen and extremely tender. Subsequently the big toe joint was inflamed and tender. The problem receeded after 7-10 days. It was diagnosed as gout and I was prescribed 100 mg ALLOPURINOL which I now take daily. I have had no further problems
