I was in the colorectal ward (45) for 5 days. The chief problem here was nocturnal noise: no attempt to let sick patients sleep. The shouting, laughing and banging of doors went on all night. Neither I nor the other patients slept The ward acted as an acoustic chamber for noise. I got horrible sleep deprivation. Some nurses were extremely kind. On the rare occasion I asked for analgesia, it never arrived so I took my own paracetemol. The food and food service were brilliant. It is noticeably understaffed and most nurses try to be kind. I felt sorry for them but despite the constant cleaning of drip stands etc., the time when a stoma contaminated the loo floor, it took me ages to get someone to clean it. There seems little awareness of real hygiene needs. I wish the staff well but the general regime and sleeplessness left me with a dread of hospitals.
