Review of NICU

We were scared when our baby was admitted in nicu but we were assured and supported well by everyone. We couldn’t thank them enough for all they’ve done for my baby. They are heroes and they need to be recognised well

The appointment I had was on time. I was very pleased with the way in which I was treated by all three staff members (receptionist, nurse and consultant) and the way in which my condition was treated. I did not get the name of my consultant but I was very pleased with the way in which he treated me.

Suggested improvements
I am not sure the experience could have been improved

I had to always come to emergency department for various reasons. Last month I had a bowel obstruction surgery. I am now 33weeks pregnant. My condition was worse. But HD0 took a great care of me. Besides that diabetes team, surgical team, dietitian nutrition team everyone took a great care. I am grateful to them but after my surgery when I came to change my dressing I was not happy with that. They told me to go to GP but GP gave me appointment like after 22days .they can't make it earlier. It was bleeding from 0.5cm skin from the bottom of my scar where my scar is more than 10cm. They removed all the dry skin up to bottom and it became pink again. I was not happy with that. Because I feel burning, irritating, tightness. 2nd I was hit by a van. I informed them I feel dizzy. I need to sleep I can't sit . But they didn't do anything. When they were taking blood to test then I fainted. Then they brought bed saline. But they didn't do anything for my swelling eyes. And when they discharge me they didn't suggest me anything to recover. Just give me card where I found only two things, eat healthy food and come back if I have headache, blur vission etc After 2days, I came back again with more swelling eyes with bruis cover my eyes and it's spreading. Then they told me to take paracetamol and use icepack. If they told me before, my pain couldn't increase. Now I am suffering. Almost 1month my scar hasn't dried and I still have black eyes

Be kind. Take the patients matter seriously. Nobody wants to be sick or stay at hospital. Waiting time is too much. I didn't find the actual reason why you are taking too much time. If I give you example of purple zone. They spend only 5 to maximum 10minutes for a patient but they called a patient after 2 or 3hours. Why ? You are showing 60 patient but in purple zone there were not 60 patients. I know you don't have enough staff but patients suffer a lot sometimes who comes with pain. I saw an Indian lady who had pain in her kidney and waited for 3hours. And finally she had to say when will you call me when I die? If patient says they are not okay, please try to see him or her 1st. HDO department took a great care but when I told them I had pain in my belly I can't tolerate it .I was screaming . They didn't do anything. When I started vomiting, condition became worse then they gave me anti sickness and paracetamol. When I was screaming because of pain why they didn't do anything. Prevention is better than cure. But you don't prevent, you do cure. That's the problem. You wait for the worse condition then you start treatment. But when patient comes with bad condition , I believe you are able to prevent it , don't wait for the worse condition.

During the 24 hours i was in the UTC and eSDEC departments all i had was bloods taken and approximately 12 hours into the visit, i was examined by an advanced nurse whom, i must add, was so lovely. I was further informed that I needed a CT scan, all the while being informed the was a 20 hour wait. I am an extremely complex case as I have numerous health issues to which the symptoms I was experiencing could have involved many of them, clearly having a large Parastomal hernia next to my Stoma, which i got through a bowel perforation, 5 blockages and 3 abscesses, emergency surgery twice leading to being on life support for 3 days and in ICU for 6 weeks and extremely lucky to be alive, was not a matter of importance at this particular time, which is unfathomable considering I have been admitted with having a bowel obstruction post Ostomy. I had presented with severe stomach pain with nausea and vomiting accompanied by abdominal tenderness. By the time I had been waiting 24 hours I had also been awake consistently for 49 hours and as you can imagine, I was exhausted. As I wasn't feeling as unwell as I originally was, the sleep deprivation took over and I discharged myself as everybody was still being informed that it was still a 20 hour wait. My reasoning was that I could get an emergency GP appointment and go through that route, which I did. I am still experiencing abdominal pain everyday accompanied with nausea and occasional vomiting.

We got referral from kings hospital after waiting around 3 hours to maxofaciallary specialist dr in queens hospital. The referral form already included the details in which dr agree to see me as well as extension no for the receptionist to call the.But the admin staff hesitated to call ,we waited again 3 hours there and we requested again to the admin staff.after she called and within half an hour we got initial assessment and dr is willing to see me.but again nurse asked us to wait for blood test .finally because of child care we couldn’t see the dr. The whole things happens because of irresponsible and unkindness of admin staff . I might get the treatment within 1 hour if the receptionist did the job correctly.

Suggested improvements
Monitor admin staff behaviour to the patient anonymously and train them how to treat people regardless of their color ,background and ethnicity. Speed up the process Give timely information to the patient. Every patient knows the long waiting time of emergency department but giving proper information will be helpful for them to stay there.

Although the hospital was so very busy the Dr's where marvelous & the nurse did all they could under very difficult circumstances. I came away with the medication that was needed to treat the clot that was found.plus the information I needed.

Suggested improvements
Iam afraid the only complaint I have is its now so unfortunate if you've been brought in on trolleys & being treated in corridors where there are so few toilets. Where you have mixed sex patients plus some with their family members with them .Plus all & sundry walking through to get to other parts of the hospital . If anyone needs to use the toilet the nurses are so busy to push the trolley near to the toilet, if you have mobility problems but can walk a short distance but toilet too far apart and not enough toilets for the amount of patient's .iam afraid it's too embarrassing to use bed pans in full view of everyone. There was on the night a few people who had had accidents toilet wise ,although they had called out to nurses to get to the toilet . I really feel for the Dr's & nurses as they are doing their very best under an impossible situation.

It was even more chaotic than usual. People had nowhere to sit. Had no idea of the waiting time that i was going to endure. Stood for hours not knowing if anybody would be able to find me if they should try to do so. Arrived at A&E at about 1pm and left at am the next day. Having said that i did have a chest xray, ct scan and an ECG that i had to wait for the results of. The doctor and staff from 10pm seemed to be a little more in control of things and more helpful but this maybe because the area had become a little less busy. And i did appreciate the free crisps, sandwich and coffee i recieved at one point, they were definately needed. But the hospital is not enough for the huge community it is now serving. All that happens is more flats are built.

Suggested improvements
More staff were needed. A large digital information board where people can see there names so they no they havn't been misplaced or forgotten. Blocks of seats that people can shift along as they are nearer to being seen. A staff member who is allocated to 5 or more patients with similar needs that can keep them informed throughout the day.
