I have suffered with arthritis in my left knee for several years now .. The last year has been completely miserable - I was having to use a mobility scooter as the pain was so bad and my mobility was extremely restricted. I am 54 years old and my doctor was reluctant to refer me for a full knee replacement as I'm quite young for the operation but it gets to a point where there really is no other alternative. Prof Jari was great at my initial consultation at Oaklands Hospital and explained everything to me. It is quite scary as it is a major operation. When I was admitted at Oaklands the staff were great - everything went smoothly with the operation. I was admitted in the morning had my operation and was back in my room by lunchtime - I was discharged two days later. I was warned by the physio's before the operation that I would be in a lot of pain after the operation - I can honestly say that the pain was less than the pain of the arthritis that I suffered with before the operation. It's now eight weeks after the operation and I am walking without crutches and back in work this week. I am not on any painkillers and my movement is so much better than before the operation - I am delighted with the outcome. Top tips if you are considering this surgery - don't expect miracles - it's not like having a healthy normal knee but it's so much better than having an arthritic one. Do your physio - this is an important as the operation - force yourself in those first few days and weeks to do the exercises you will so feel the benefit in the long run. I wish I'd had the surgery earlier - it has improved my quality of life immeasurably and I am extremely grateful to Prof Jari for his calm professionalism and for an excellent outcome.
