Specialises in: General surgery

Professor Irshad Shaikh was awarded the iWantGreatCare certificate of excellence in 2025 for delivering outstanding care.
I am an experienced Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Spire Norwich Hospital. My specialist areas are anal fistula/fissure surgery, haemorrhoid surgery (including HALO procedure), anal and colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease surgery, rectal prolapse surgery, hernia surgery, and treatment of locally advanced pelvic cancer. I gained my medical degree (MBBS) from Karnatak University in India in 1997. Subsequently, I trained in Scotland and completed higher surgical training on the Southeast Thames rotation in London. I was awarded an MD (research) degree from the University of Aberdeen in 2008 and CCT (completion of specialist training in general and colorectal surgery) in 2013. I went on to complete a year-long RSO fellowship at St Mark's Hospital, followed by a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery sponsored by Ethicon in 2014. I also undertook training in locally advanced rectal cancers, including pelvic exenteration. In October 2014, I was appointed as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Additionally, I previously held an honorary consultant surgeon post at St Mark's Hospital, Harrow, London. I lead the advanced rectal cancer surgery team and am the joint lead for anal cancer surgery. I am one of two surgeons in NNUH accredited by the JAG as a National Bowel Cancer Screening (BSCP) Endoscopist. I was the team lead for starting the robotic colorectal programme at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. I am a European level trainer for robotic colorectal surgery and an experienced proctor accredited by EARCS. I was instrumental in supporting the robotic colorectal cancer surgery programmes in Scottish health boards and several hospitals in England. I have a great interest in robotic/laparoscopic clinical research. I was awarded grants in Aberdeen (2006-7) and Norwich (2020) to undertake cancer-related and robotic surgery research. I am a keen trainer for surgical trainees and also mentor/proctor junior consultant surgeons in robotic surgical training. I completed a Master’s degree in clinical education from the UEA in 2019, demonstrating commitment to surgical training. I also hold a position as College Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I regularly provide robotic training to several European colorectal surgeons. In addition, I am a trainer for laparoscopic colorectal surgery in national-level courses. I have described and published several innovative operative procedures in peer-reviewed journals. The cancer surgery results are published online in peer-reviewed journals. In 2022, I was honoured with a National Clinical Excellence Award for five years. I serve as the European Director for the Robotic Colorectal Fellowship and specialize in robotic pelvic exenteration surgery. Spire hospital Norwich PA: Donna Lorne, 07771984156

I had a bowel resection. Prof Shaikh did this using a robot. I have some small neat scars that healed quick and I didn’t need stitches just glue. Was able to resume activity due to how quickly I recovered. Brilliant

Professor Shaikh made me feel very relaxed and explained everything with great care , this was my third inguinal hernia repair and by far the best that I have had , No pain when I woke up and little discomfort apart from the belly button where the robotic equipment went in that was like a wasp sting for a week Brilliant surgeon would definitely recommend him to anyone

I was a medical student observing Prof Shaikh in clinic. He was a very effective teacher and explained the cases to us clearly. He also helped us to examine patients, which has been an enormous help in my education. Overall I had an extremely positive time under him.

I cannot thank Professor Shaikh and his team enough. I had Robotic surgery on the 10th November 2025 for colon cancer, Professor Shaikh removed all the cancer and my recovery has gone really well, I had no major problems and as I write this I am feeling very well. Professor Shaikh was compassionate and caring as was his team of nurses. I had my 5 month check up today and all is going well. Give yourselves a huge clap on the back, you all deserve it and more.

Professor Irshad Shaikh has treated my elderly mum with respect and consideration. He explained everything clearly and listened to our concerns and thoughts. He made follow up calls to other doctors to assure mum that the next step is being taken. Very kind and personable.

I have been very impressed with the care I have received from the Norfolk Norwich Hospital particularly Dr Biswas the oncologist, his nurse Siobhan Falco is absolutely on it. Professor Shaikh I cannot thank enough either for the work that he has done on me in surgery removing the bowel cancer. I had two marks on my body as to whether or not I was going to have a bag of some description either temporary or permanent. Through great skill and the use of the robots Professor Shaikh passing incredibly removed the Cancer successfully and no bags required at all, which is quite frankly amazing. I know that I was a particularly difficult case due to an injury at birth, this meant at my insides were very much not as you would expect to find. Thank you, thank you, these words are just not enough.
