In 1979 playing football I sustained a heavy impact injury on my right knee and the post cruciate ligament was ruptured. This was treated non-operatively. In 1992 I had my first arthroscopy on the right knee and then subsequently on both knees in 2004. During this period I was playing tennis on a regular basis but was still suffering from pain in the right knee. The arthroscopies provided temporary relief but the problems persisted. In 2011 I consulted a different knee surgeon as the surgeon who had undertaken the previous arthroscopies had since retired – and was advised not to undergo any further surgical intervention at that time. Since 2011 the pain in the right knee became progressively worse and rather than being only occasional the pain became fairly constant and more intense. Fortuitously on searching the internet for recommended specialist knee surgeons I located Professor Adrian Wilson. My first appointment with Professor Wilson was in January 2018 at which he outlined all the various options, from the very conservative to the ultimate option of having a knee replacement. Following a MRI scan and long leg x-rays the preferred treatment option was advised to be a high tibial osteotomy of the right leg which would in essence realign the tibia bone so as to relieve the pressure – and pain – on the right knee. In July 2018 Professor Wilson undertook the high tibial osteotomy together with an arthroscopy at the Wellington Hospital. Following the operation I utilised the “Game Ready” machine for a month to promote recovery. I have seen Professor Wilson for follow-up appointments and he is very pleased with my progress. My understanding is that one of the advantages of having an osteotomy operation is that the knee structure itself remains intact so that such an operation does not prevent future possible other treatment for the knee if so required. My operation has been a great success and my only regret is that I was not referred to Professor Wilson many years ago.
