Avril Chang is an exceptional consultant and surgeon. I know she has done the procedure 1000s of times but she still made me feel that my singular case was the sole focus of her attention. Patient, thorough, reassuring, puts patients at ease. I am confident I am in the best of hands.

I’ve had an in person initial appointment with Dr Chang earlier this year, then a follow-up telephone conversation more recently. On both occasions I found Dr Chang to be excellent at listening and empathetic to my case. She confirmed surgery was required for the problem my GP had suggested and was very clear about the next steps. Dr Chang explained the possible complications of an existing medical condition that may have some influence on the surgery that I require and was at the same time extremely reassuring. The letters that followed both consultations were perfect summaries of our conversations. On the basis of these two appointments I can say Dr Chang is particularly thorough and I was made to feel very much that she has my best interest in mind.

Ms Chang saw me at short notice, due to the severity of my symptoms. She conducted a full consultation, took my history, ordered blood tests and gave me antibiotics as an interim measure while she scheduled emergency surgery for the following week. She explained everything to me carefully and made sure all my questions were answered, taking into account ongoing medical conditions; for a first surgery I went in feeling very relaxed and in control. I knew exactly what to expect before, during and after. On the day of surgery she came to see me again to get consent and offered an opportunity to ask more questions. She let me tell her what the procedure and risks were as I remembered it, which proved very helpful in feeling in charge of the whole process (and to correct anything erroneous). She was there when I woke up from the anaesthesia and immediately gave me an update on the situation and how it had gone, as well as my expected release day and answered any questions I had. She said she would visit again in the morning the day after and was promptly there at 9 to see how the night had gone. She was very quick to address any discomfort on my side and was happy to take my guidance on whether I should be discharged or not. She visited again at 12 to check on my progress and we agreed to discharge me. I spoke to the nurses about the quality of her work and all informed me that she's extremely efficient, always visiting patients as soon as possible so everyone knows what the plan is and there is no waiting around. They also pointed out that her patients normally go home as planned and that no complications come up. I have a large tattoo which Ms Chang left untouched, choosing to cut just above it and using wound glue rather than stitches so as to avoid scarring in future. I'm extremely grateful for her excellent practical skills, bedside manner, and emotional intelligence in working with her patients. I would recommend Ms Chang to anyone having surgery done, and especially for any patients who suffer from a mental health condition.
